POSITION SUMMARY:
We are currently recruiting a Grounds Maintenance Worker. The Grounds Maintenance Worker is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the appearance of campus outdoor spaces through landscape care, lawn maintenance, weed control, seasonal cleanup, and general grounds upkeep. Duties also include trash and debris removal and other related responsibilities as assigned. This full-time position starts at $18 per hour and is located in Suffolk, VA.
Work schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm

- Maintain and enhance the appearance of outdoor spaces by mowing lawns, trimming shrubs, edging, planting flowers, and supporting overall landscape aesthetics.
- Apply fertilizer, herbicides, and weed control treatments to maintain healthy turf and control unwanted vegetation.
- Operate and maintain groundskeeping equipment such as lawnmowers, trimmers, leaf blowers, and other landscaping tools, ensuring equipment is used safely and properly maintained.
- Perform seasonal grounds cleanup, including raking leaves, removing debris, and preparing outdoor areas for seasonal changes.
- Collect and dispose of litter, trash, and recyclables from campus grounds to ensure a clean and well-maintained environment.
- Support irrigation and watering of landscaped areas as needed.
- Follow all safety procedures related to equipment use, chemical application, and grounds maintenance activities.
- Participate in developing department goals, objectives, and systems.
- Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and other seminars as assigned.
- Recommend process improvements, policies, and procedures to enhance efficiency and service quality.
- Work collaboratively as part of a team to support campus operations and maintenance needs.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills:
- Experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, or general outdoor maintenance
- Ability to operate landscaping equipment such as lawnmowers, trimmers, and leaf blowers
- Knowledge of basic lawn care practices including mowing, edging, pruning, and planting
- Must be comfortable applying fertilizer, herbicides, and weed control treatments (training may be provided if needed)
- Understanding of seasonal grounds maintenance and cleanup practices
- Ability to perform physical labor outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain campus appearance standards
- Ability to follow safety procedures related to equipment and chemical use
- Team-oriented with strong communication and reliability
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Prior experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, or custodial/maintenance work preferred
- Relevant certifications in pesticide/herbicide application or landscaping equipment operation is a plus but not required
