Position Overview
The Controls Technician will install, program, commission and maintain building automation and HVAC control systems for commercial properties. This role focuses on ensuring reliable, energy-efficient operation of BAS and HVAC controls through troubleshooting, preventive maintenance and timely service response, while working closely with project engineers, service teams and customers.
Key Responsibilities

Install, wire and commission building automation systems (BAS) and HVAC control equipment in commercial buildings.

Program and configure controllers, supervisory software and field devices using industry protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus).

Troubleshoot and repair controls, sensors, actuators, VFDs and related HVAC control components both remotely and on-site.

Perform preventive maintenance, system testing and commissioning to ensure optimal system performance and energy efficiency.

Respond to service calls, diagnose issues, provide timely corrective actions and document service activities.

Integrate BAS with third-party systems and perform software updates and backup configuration files.

Interpret electrical schematics, control drawings and sequence of operations; maintain accurate project documentation.

Provide technical support and training to building operators and clients on system operation and best practices.

Adhere to safety protocols, company policies and applicable codes while working on commercial sites.

Collaborate with electricians, HVAC technicians and project managers to complete installations and service projects on schedule.
Qualifications
-
High school diploma or equivalent; technical diploma or certification in HVAC controls, electrical or related field preferred.

2+ years of hands-on experience with building automation systems (BAS), HVAC controls or as a service technician in commercial settings.

Experience with commercial building automation, BAS platforms, HVAC control equipment and common protocols (BACnet, Modbus, etc.).

Strong troubleshooting skills for controls, sensors, actuators, and VFDs; able to use multimeters, megohmmeters and diagnostic tools.

Familiarity with HVAC systems and sequences of operation; understanding of energy management principles.

Valid driver's license and ability to travel to customer sites; willingness to be on-call for emergency service as needed.

Good communication and customer service skills; able to explain technical issues to non-technical stakeholders.

Physical ability to climb ladders, work in mechanical rooms and lift equipment; able to work safely in commercial building environments.

Relevant certifications a plus (EPA 608, NATE, manufacturer BAS certifications, OSHA 10/30).

Ability to read electrical schematics, control wiring diagrams and maintain accurate service records.
