Low Income Taxpayer Clinic
Full-Time Qualified Tax Expert (In-person)
We are looking for a Qualified Tax Expert to prepare tax returns, recommend tax strategies, consult on tax matters, and respond to tax notices from our IRS federal Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) clients. To succeed in this role, you should demonstrate knowledge of tax laws and regulations. Excellent time management skills are essential.
Responsibilities
- Prepare tax returns
- Recommend tax strategies to represent clients with tax notices
- Prepare necessary paperwork for tax returns and response to IRS
- Prepare and analyze accounting, tax, and financial data
- Follow and track changes related to federal taxes
- Liaise with LITC clients and IRS
- Screen potential clients for eligibility for the LITC program.
- Establish a process for promptly assisting with all clients.
- Stay abreast of all aspects of individual case management and significant case developments, maintain orderly client files.
- Use of the LAW database and other electronic tools, obtain account transcripts and other information from the IRS.
- Support taxpayer education including offering presentations and workshops for all communities including English as a Second Language (ESL) taxpayers.
- Establish an outreach plan to insure that the services of LITC are effectively publicized to low income, underserved, and ESL taxpayers.
- Maintain a productive and collegial working relationship the IRS, LITC’s national office, the United States Tax Court, other organizations in the community, and attend required conferences.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills
- Knowledge of tax, accounting, and bookkeeping procedures
- Familiarity with accounting and tax software packages
- Computer literacy (MS Excel in particular)
- Excellent analytical and time management skills
- Strong numeracy skills
- BS degree or higher in Accounting, Finance, and Taxation with industry license / certification.
- Authorized to practice law before the IRS and Tax Court
Qualifications
One or more licenses and / or certifications
- Attorney with admission to Massachusetts State Bar, admission to the US Tax Court, authorization to practice before the IRS, prior experience working in the field of tax law and with tax controversies.
- Enrolled Agent
- Certified Public Accountant
Prior work with civil legal services, volunteers, producing training events, etc.
