Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented CNC Lathe Setup Person to join our machining team. In this role, you will be responsible for preparing, setting up, and proving out CNC lathes to produce high-quality, precision components. You will bridge the gap between engineering blueprints and production, ensuring that machines are perfectly calibrated, tooling is correct, and the first-article parts meet exact specifications before handing the run over to production operators.
Key ResponsibilitiesMachine Setup & Calibration
- Interpret Technical Data: Read and analyze complex blueprints, engineering drawings, GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) symbols, and setup sheets.
- Tooling & Workholding: Select, assemble, and install the correct cutting tools, inserts, collets, chuck jaws, and fixtures required for each specific job.
- Program Loading & Editing: Load CNC programs into machine controls (Fanuc or similar). Perform necessary G-code and M-code edits at the machine to optimize tool paths, feeds, and speeds.
- Work & Tool Offsets: Set accurate tool geometries, work coordinate systems (G54, etc.), and touch off tools accurately.
Quality & First-Piece Inspection
- First-Article Inspection: Run the "first-piece" part, perform complete visual and dimensional inspections, and secure Quality Assurance approval before releasing the machine to production.
- Precision Measurement: Professionally use micrometers, calipers, depth gages, bore gages, thread gages, and optical comparators to verify dimensions to tight tolerances (often within $\pm 0.0005$ inches).
- Troubleshooting: Diagnose and correct dimensional errors, surface finish issues, or tool chatter during the initial setup phase.
Production Support & Maintenance
- Operator Hand-off: Clearly communicate specific run instructions, critical dimensions to monitor, and potential risks to the production operators.
- Preventative Maintenance: Perform daily checks on fluid levels (coolant/way lube), clean chips, and ensure workholding surfaces are clear of debris to maintain machine accuracy.
- Continuous Improvement: Collaborate with programming and engineering teams to recommend improvements in tooling, cycle times, and setup reduction practices.
Qualifications & SkillsRequired Experience
- Experience: Minimum of 3–5 years of dedicated experience setting up multi-axis CNC Lathes (experience with live tooling, sub-spindles, or bar feeders is highly preferred).
- G/M Code Proficiency: Strong working knowledge of manual G-code and M-code editing at the machine control panel.
- Blueprint Reading: Expert-level ability to interpret manufacturing blueprints and a solid understanding of GD&T.
Physical & General Requirements
- Strong math skills
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods in a manufacturing environment.
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent; technical degree or journeyman certification in machining is a major plus.
