To coordinate and assist in the planning and execution of preventative maintenance programs and to operate and control the plant processes and equipment necessary to clarify, treat and disinfect wastewater discharged to receiving waters. This position will be assigned to various work schedules as needed to provide for the adequate staffing of the Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Process Monitoring and Control
Ability to monitor control panels, interpret meter and gauge readings, and adjust valves and gates to regulate the flow of sewage. This includes starting and stopping pumps, engines, and generators to control the flow of raw sewage through various treatment processes.
Problem Solving and Decision Making
Proficiency in identifying variations in operating conditions, analyzing test results, and making operational decisions that affect wastewater treatment processes. This involves addressing issues such as equipment malfunctions, obstructions, and maintenance requirements to ensure efficient plant operations.
Maintenance and Repair
Skill in performing routine plant maintenance tasks, including cleaning, painting, and minor repairs to equipment and facilities. This also includes assisting plant maintenance personnel as needed and maintaining an inventory of repair parts, supplies, and equipment for the plant.
Teamwork and Collaboration
Ability to work collaboratively with other operators and plant personnel to ensure the smooth operation of the wastewater treatment plant. This involves giving directions to subordinate operators, assisting shift operators with operational duties, and filling in for operators during absences.
Communication and Compliance
Proficiency in understanding and communicating written instructions, as well as following supervisor's instructions and complying with safety protocols and regulatory requirements. This includes reporting equipment repairs, maintaining accurate records, and adhering to the city's goals and objectives for wastewater treatment.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Must possess an Ohio EPA Class I Wastewater Operator’s license or obtain one with 2 years from hire date. Without Class I license the pay range will be 08; with license the pay range will be 09.
- Must have Class II Wastewater Operator’s License or obtain one within 3 years from date of hire.
- Must have or obtain a commercial driver's license with all applicable endorsements within four hundred eighty (480) working hours from date of hire.
- Valid Ohio Driver’s License with all applicable endorsements.
Essential Responsibilities
- Monitors control panels and adjusts valves and gates manually or by remote control to regulate flow of sewage.
- Observes variations in operating conditions and interprets meter and gauge readings and tests results to determine load requirements.
- Starts and stops pumps, engines, and generators to control flow of raw sewage through filtering,
settling, aeration, and sludge digestion processes.
- Removes obstructions, such as coarse materials from Bar Screens, to accelerate influent through initial
screening process.
- Turns air and steam valves to aerate effluent, and to control temperature in sludge digestion tanks.
- Maintains log of operations and records meter and gauge readings.
- Gives directions to subordinate sewage Plant Operators in performing routine operations and maintenance
when acting as shift operator after receiving Class I Operator’s License.
- May collect sewage sample, using dipper or bottle and conduct laboratory tests for BOD, COD, DO, Ph, temperature, suspended solids, phosphate and nitrogen analysis. May use various testing equipment to obtain lab results.
- Make operational decisions, which affect Wastewater treatment.
- Cleans and paints portions of the plant equipment or facilities, and performs routine plant maintenance, and other duties as assigned.
- Reports need for major equipment repairs or makes minor repairs him/herself.
- Assists Shift Operators in performing operational duties and any other special tasks that can only be done during normal business hours.
- Fills in on all shifts for operators while they are on vacation or extended sick leave.
- Assists plant maintenance personnel as needed.
- Maintains inventory of repair parts, supplies and equipment for the plant.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent.
- Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in division.
- Ability to understand and communicate written instructions.
