Position Summary
W.E. Bowman Construction is seeking a Commercial Construction Project Engineer. The Commercial Construction Project Engineer is responsible for managing project cost controls, budgeting, forecasting, and financial tracking throughout all phases of construction projects. This role works closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, Accounting, and Estimating teams to ensure projects remain financially aligned with budgets, schedules, and contractual requirements. The Construction Project Engineer analyzes project costs, prepares reports, monitors labor and material expenditures, and supports overall project profitability.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, monitor, and maintain project budgets, cost forecasts, and cost control systems.
- Track project expenditures, labor costs, material costs, subcontractor costs, and equipment usage.
- Prepare and analyze cost reports, earned value reports, and financial performance metrics.
- Assist with project billing, change orders, purchase orders, and subcontract management.
- Review invoices, progress billings, and payment applications for accuracy.
- Monitor project schedules and evaluate financial impacts related to delays or scope changes.
- Support Project Managers with forecasting, cash flow analysis, and profitability tracking.
- Coordinate with Accounting to reconcile project financials and job cost reports.
- Assist in bid analysis, estimating reviews, and budget development during preconstruction.
- Identify cost risks, variances, and opportunities for cost savings.
- Maintain detailed project documentation, logs, and financial records.
- Participate in project meetings and provide financial status updates to management.
- Ensure compliance with contract requirements, company policies, and reporting procedures.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Finance, Accounting, Business or related field preferred.
- 0 to 5+ years of experience in construction cost control, project engineering, estimating, or project accounting preferred.
- Understanding of construction processes, contracts, scheduling, and project lifecycle management.
- Experience with job costing, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
- Knowledge of construction accounting principles and cost management practices.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and coordination abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and construction management/accounting software.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with Procore, Sage, or similar platforms.
- Ability to analyze project schedules and financial impacts.
- Understanding of change management and earned value management (EVM).
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in reporting.
- Ability to work in fast-paced project environments with multiple deadlines.
- Knowledge of procurement and subcontract administration processes.
- Knowledge of AI as it relates to construction management.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to occasionally visit active construction sites.
- Ability to walk job sites and attend field meetings as required.
- Ability to work extended hours during critical project phases if needed.
Reporting Structure
Reports to Project Manager/Vice President and works closely with Accounting, Estimating, and Field Operations teams.
