The ideal candidate is a passionate educator who can inspire a love for language and learning in multilingual students, supporting their academic and linguistic growth while serving as a faith role model within our vibrant Catholic community.
Key Responsibilities
- Instruction: Develop and implement differentiated ENL instruction for grades K-8, focusing on the four language domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, to help English Language Learners (ELLs) access core content.
- Curriculum & Planning: Create engaging, scaffolded lesson plans that align with state language proficiency standards and are enhanced by a Catholic worldview that celebrates diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Assessment: Administer language proficiency assessments to identify student needs, track linguistic progress, provide constructive feedback, and inform instructional accommodations, including NYS Language Assessments.
- Classroom Environment: Foster a welcoming, inclusive, structured, and faith-filled classroom environment that promotes cultural appreciation, academic confidence, and personal development.
- Collaboration: Work collaboratively with general education teachers, content area specialists, and parents to implement accommodations, co-teach or push-in where necessary, and support overall student success.
- Parent Communication: Maintain regular, culturally sensitive, and proactive communication with parents/guardians (utilizing translation resources when needed) regarding student performance and academic progress.
- Record Keeping: Keep accurate and up-to-date records of student language profiles, compliance documentation, grades, attendance, and communication logs as required by school and diocesan policy.
Catholic Faith and Mission
- Faith Integration: Weave Catholic values, universal moral principles, and a spirit of hospitality into daily lessons, emphasizing that every student is a child of God with unique gifts.
- Spiritual Leadership: Lead students in daily prayer, participate in school liturgies and retreats, and serve as a living example of the Catholic faith.
- Community: Actively support and advance the school's Catholic identity and mission, advocating for the unique needs of multilingual families both inside and outside the classroom.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), Linguistics, Education, or a related field. A Master's degree is preferred.
- Certification: Valid state teaching certification; an ENL/ESL or Bilingual endorsement is preferred.
- Experience: Previous experience teaching elementary school language learners and working with culturally diverse populations is highly desired. Familiarity with WIDA assessments (MODEL, Screener, or ACCESS for ELLs) is strongly preferred.
- Faith Commitment: Must be a practicing Catholic in good standing, committed to the spiritual and academic formation of our students.
- Skills: Strong knowledge of second language acquisition pedagogy, scaffolding strategies, excellent intercultural communication skills, and proficiency in a second language (such as Spanish) is a strong asset but not required.
