Position Summary
The Pharmacist is responsible for providing safe, accurate, and efficient pharmaceutical care to patients while ensuring compliance with all applicable federal and state laws, regulations, and pharmacy policies.
The Pharmacist will oversee prescription processing and dispensing, counsel patients, supervise pharmacy staff, manage clinical and operational activities, and maintain high standards of patient safety and customer service.
Essential ResponsibilitiesPrescription Processing & Dispensing
- Review and accurately interpret prescriptions and medication orders.
- Verify prescription information, drug selection, dosage, directions, quantity, and appropriate therapy.
- Check for drug interactions, allergies, contraindications, duplicate therapy, and other potential medication-related problems.
- Perform final verification of prescriptions before dispensing.
- Ensure prescriptions are prepared and dispensed accurately and efficiently.
- Contact prescribers when clarification or additional information is required.
- Process insurance claims and assist with resolving rejected or problematic claims.
- Ensure appropriate documentation is maintained for prescription and clinical activities.
Patient Care & Counseling
- Provide professional counseling to patients regarding medications, including proper use, dosage, administration, side effects, precautions, and storage.
- Answer patient questions and provide appropriate medication-related information.
- Promote adherence and safe medication use.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements.
- Identify situations requiring referral to a physician or other healthcare professional.
Pharmacy Operations
- Supervise pharmacy technicians and other pharmacy personnel within the scope permitted by law.
- Assign and monitor daily workflow and responsibilities.
- Ensure adequate staffing and efficient prescription workflow.
- Maintain pharmacy cleanliness, organization, and appropriate storage conditions.
- Monitor inventory levels and assist with ordering and receiving medications.
- Help prevent medication errors, inventory discrepancies, and loss of controlled substances.
- Follow pharmacy policies and standard operating procedures.
Regulatory & Compliance
- Comply with all federal and state pharmacy laws and regulations.
- Follow controlled substance regulations and maintain appropriate records.
- Ensure compliance with Board of Pharmacy requirements, DEA requirements, HIPAA, OSHA, and applicable payer requirements.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation for audits and inspections.
- Participate in quality assurance and medication-error prevention programs.
- Report and appropriately document medication errors and significant incidents.
Clinical Services
- Provide immunizations and other authorized pharmacy services in accordance with applicable laws and training.
- Assist patients with medication therapy and adherence programs.
- Support MTM, medication synchronization, adherence services, and other clinical programs as applicable.
- Provide health education and preventive-care information within the pharmacist's scope of practice.
Customer Service
- Provide professional, courteous, and respectful service to all patients.
- Address patient concerns and resolve problems appropriately.
- Maintain a welcoming and professional pharmacy environment.
- Protect patient privacy during all interactions.
Qualifications
- Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) or equivalent degree from an accredited pharmacy program.
- Current and unrestricted pharmacist license in CA.
- Current immunization certification,
- Current CPR/BLS certification
- Knowledge of pharmacy law, prescription processing, medication safety, and pharmacy operations.
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively with patients, physicians, technicians, and other healthcare professionals.
- Previous community or independent pharmacy experience preferred.
Physical & Work Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to perform repetitive computer and prescription-processing activities.
- Ability to lift and move pharmacy supplies and inventory as reasonably required.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced pharmacy environment.
- Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail while managing multiple responsibilities.
