OVERVIEW:
The Certified Medical Assistant performs a combination of administrative and clinical tasks in a healthcare setting. These professionals commonly work alongside other medical staff under the supervision of physicians. Certified Medical Assistant can be an essential part of a healthcare team, as their responsibilities help keep the facilities the work in organized and operating manner.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Welcomes patients by greeting them, in person or on the phone, answering and referring inquiries

Verifies patient information by interviewing patient; reviewing and/or recording medical history; taking vitals; confirming purpose of visit or treatment

Secure patient information and maintain patient confidence by completing and safeguarding medical records; completing diagnostic coding and procedure coding; keeping patient information confidential

Counsel patients by transmitting physician’s orders and questions the patient they may have
-
Maintain safe, secure and healthy work environment by establishing and following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations
RESPONSIBILITIES/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

Prepares patients for the health care visit by directing and/or accompanying them to the exam room; providing examination gowns and drapes; helping position themselves for the examination by the physician; arranging examining room instruments, supplies, and equipment

Supports patient care delivery by helping health care provider during exam; preparing laboratory specimens; performing basic laboratory test; disposing of contaminated supplies; sterilizing medical instruments; administering medications; authorizing drug refills as directed; telephoning prescriptions to the pharmacies; preparing patients for x-rays; removing sutures; changing dressings

Educates patients by providing medication and diet information and instruction, answering questions

Completes records by recording patient examination, treatment, and test results in the EMR

Generates revenues by recording billing information of services rendered

Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshoot any breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance
-
Maintain safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following, and enforcing standards and procedures, complying with state, federal and local regulations

Maintains patient confidentiality

Serves and protects the physician or health care provider practice by adhering to professional standards, policies and procedures, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization (JCAHO) standards

Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; participating in professional organization; and maintaining personal networks

Enhances health care practice reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests

Perform any other duties that may be necessary for the operation of the corporation and/or hospital
Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or GED Certificate
-
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) Credentials
-
Clinical Training through vocational college or technical institute
-
Required to renew their CMA license
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Frequent mobility and/or sitting required for extended periods of time

Manual dexterity and use of a calculator or computer keyboard.

Varied activities including standing, walking, reaching, bending, lifting

Occasionally lifts to 50 pounds

Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal ranges

Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours

Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionization radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a hospital and/or clinic environment
