STEM Enrichment Instructors & Program Assistants

Pay: $18.00–$35.00/hour based on role, qualifications, and experience
Young Engineers of Lexington is growing our instructional team! We are seeking enthusiastic, dependable individuals to help deliver hands-on, LEGO-based STEM enrichment programs for elementary and middle school students throughout Lexington.
We are hiring at three distinct levels based on education, professional credentials, and experience.
Please review the qualifications for each level carefully. Candidates will be considered for the position that best matches their qualifications and experience. Applying does not automatically qualify a candidate for the highest-paying position.
Level 1: STEM Enrichment Program Assistant
Starting Pay: $16.50/hour
Best fit for: College students and high school interns interested in STEM, engineering, education, youth development, or leadership.
Program Assistants work alongside Young Engineers instructors and assist with student learning and program operations.
Qualifications
- Current college student or high school student/intern
- Enjoys working with children and serving as a positive role model
- Dependable, responsible, and professional
- Comfortable working with individuals and small groups of students
- Able to communicate effectively and work as part of a team
- Available for weekday afternoon programming
- Able to reliably arrive on time at assigned Lexington program sites
Previous experience through tutoring, mentoring, camps, after-school programs, coaching, volunteering, or similar activities is preferred but not required.
No prior engineering experience is required. Training is provided.
Level 2: Assistant Enrichment Instructor
Starting Pay: $19.50/hour
Best fit for: Bachelor's degree holders, entry-level teachers, paraprofessionals, recent college graduates, and professionals with experience working with children.
Assistant Enrichment Instructors work alongside Lead Instructors and take an active role in facilitating STEM activities, supporting classroom management, and guiding students through LEGO-based engineering builds.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required
- Experience working with children in an educational, after-school, childcare, tutoring, mentoring, coaching, camp, or similar setting
- Comfortable engaging and managing small groups of students
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Dependable, responsible, and professional
- Available for weekday afternoon programming
- Able to reliably arrive on time at assigned Lexington program sites
This is an excellent opportunity for new teachers, paraprofessionals, recent education graduates, or other bachelor's-level professionals looking to build additional instructional and classroom-management experience.
No engineering degree is required. Training and curriculum materials are provided.
Level 3: Lead Enrichment Instructor
Pay: Up to $35.00/hour based on qualifications and experience
Best fit for: Experienced certified teachers and education professionals with demonstrated instructional leadership and management experience.
Lead Enrichment Instructors are responsible for independently leading Young Engineers classes, managing the classroom environment, facilitating the curriculum, and providing direction to Assistant Instructors and Program Assistants.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must meet all of the following requirements to be considered for the Lead Enrichment Instructor level:
- Current or previously held teaching certification
- Bachelor's degree or higher
- Prior classroom teaching experience
- Prior leadership, supervisory, or management experience
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage a classroom or group of elementary or middle school students
- Strong instructional, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to provide direction and support to other instructional staff
- Dependable, organized, responsible, and professional
- Available for weekday afternoon programming
- Able to reliably arrive on time at assigned Lexington program sites
Lead Instructors are responsible for delivering Young Engineers curriculum, introducing STEM and engineering concepts in an engaging and age-appropriate way, managing student behavior and classroom routines, overseeing program procedures, and communicating professionally with school staff and Young Engineers leadership.
Applicants who do not meet the Lead Instructor requirements may still be considered for an Assistant Instructor or Program Assistant position.
What Our Instructional Team Does
Depending on role and experience, team members may:
- Facilitate hands-on LEGO-based STEM enrichment classes
- Guide students through building, testing, and improving engineering models
- Encourage creativity, teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving
- Work with individual students and small groups
- Support or lead classroom management and student transitions
- Prepare and organize LEGO kits and instructional materials
- Manage or assist with attendance and student dismissal
- Communicate with school staff and Young Engineers leadership
- Support STEM events and demonstrations
Schedule
This is a part-time, primarily weekday afternoon position.
Our current Lexington schedule includes:
Mondays: 2:45 p.m.–4:30 p.m.
Wednesdays: 2:45 p.m.–4:30 p.m.
Additional weekday opportunities may become available as programming expands.
Start Date: Week of August 24, 2026
Location: Young Engineers partner schools and program sites throughout Lexington, KY
Compensation & Placement
Compensation is based on the position for which the candidate qualifies:
STEM Enrichment Program Assistant: Starting at $16.50/hour
Assistant Enrichment Instructor: Starting at $19.50/hour
Lead Enrichment Instructor: Up to $35.00/hour based on qualifications and experience
Candidates will be evaluated based on their education, teaching credentials, experience working with children, classroom experience, and leadership/management experience.
Young Engineers will determine the appropriate position and compensation level during the interview and hiring process.
