Psychiatrist / Medical Director – Detox & Residential Substance Use Disorder Program
Location: San Diego, California
Position Overview
We are seeking a compassionate, experienced, and collaborative Psychiatrist to serve as the Medical Director for our Detoxification and Residential Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Program in San Diego, California.
This is a 1099 Independent Contractor position requiring one on-site visit per week to provide direct patient care, clinical leadership, and collaboration with the interdisciplinary treatment team. In addition to the weekly on-site visit, the Psychiatrist will provide remote clinical oversight, chart review, documentation review, and consultation throughout the week as needed.
The Medical Director will play an integral role in ensuring high-quality, evidence-based psychiatric and addiction medicine services while supporting regulatory compliance, quality improvement initiatives, and exceptional patient outcomes.
Key ResponsibilitiesClinical Leadership & Medical Oversight
- Serve as Medical Director for the Detoxification and Residential Substance Use Disorder programs.
- Provide psychiatric and medical oversight for detoxification and residential treatment services.
- Ensure compliance with California regulations, accreditation standards, and evidence-based clinical practices.
- Provide clinical guidance and support to physicians, nurse practitioners, nursing staff, therapists, and leadership.
- Assist in the development and implementation of medical policies, procedures, and quality improvement initiatives.
Psychiatric & Addiction Medicine Patient Care
- Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, including initial psychiatric evaluations and follow-up appointments during the weekly on-site visit.
- Evaluate and treat adults with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions.
- Prescribe, manage, and monitor psychiatric medications and medications for substance use disorders when clinically appropriate.
- Monitor treatment effectiveness, medication response, withdrawal symptoms, and patient progress.
- Develop and oversee individualized, evidence-based treatment plans.
Administrative & Clinical Responsibilities
- Review and electronically sign psychiatric evaluations, history and physicals, medication orders, and clinical documentation in a timely manner.
- Provide remote clinical consultation to providers and nursing staff throughout the week.
- Ensure admissions, physician documentation, and medical records are completed within required regulatory and organizational timeframes.
- Support medical necessity documentation and utilization review processes.
- Assist with complex clinical decision-making and patient care planning.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
- Participate in interdisciplinary treatment team (IDT) meetings during the weekly on-site visit.
- Collaborate with nursing, therapists, case management, and executive leadership to ensure coordinated patient care.
- Provide education and mentorship to clinical staff regarding psychiatric care, addiction medicine, withdrawal management, and co-occurring disorders.
Documentation & Compliance
- Complete timely, accurate documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Ensure compliance with California licensing requirements, accreditation standards, payer expectations, and facility policies.
- Promote patient safety, quality improvement, medication management, and risk management initiatives.
Qualifications Required
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school.
- Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry.
- Active and unrestricted California medical license.
- Active DEA registration.
- Experience treating adults with substance use disorders and co-occurring psychiatric conditions.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.
Preferred
- Previous experience serving as a Medical Director.
- Experience in detoxification, residential treatment, addiction medicine, or behavioral healthcare.
- Familiarity with CARF, Joint Commission, and California regulatory requirements.
- Experience with electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
Contract Requirements
- 1099 Independent Contractor.
- Active California medical license and DEA registration maintained throughout the contract.
- Maintain all required professional credentials and certifications.
- Availability for one scheduled on-site visit each week, with remote clinical oversight and consultation provided throughout the week as needed.
Schedule
- One on-site day per week in San Diego, California.
