Position Summary
The Fiber Communications Lineman Apprentice is an entry-to-developing field position responsible for assisting the crew with the safe installation, maintenance, and repair of aerial and underground fiber optic systems. Under the direct supervision of the Foreman and journey-level linemen, the Apprentice learns the trade by performing ground support, climbing and bucket work, equipment operation, and basic fiber construction tasks. This role is designed to develop the technical skills, safety habits, and field knowledge required to advance to Lineman and beyond.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Field Support & Construction Tasks
- Assist the crew with the daily installation, maintenance, and repair of aerial and underground fiber optic cable systems under the direction of the Foreman and journey-level linemen.
- Perform ground support duties including handling materials, rigging tools and equipment, setting up cable reels, and assisting with cable pulling and placement.
- Learn and assist with pole framing, strand and lashing, ADSS installation, conduit and innerduct installation, and basic OSP (Outside Plant) hardware placement.
- Climb poles and operate from bucket trucks once trained and authorized; perform work at heights in accordance with fall protection requirements.
- Assist with locating, identifying, and protecting existing underground utilities prior to and during excavation.
- Support splicing operations by preparing cable, setting up splice trailers, organizing fiber, and performing other tasks as directed.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all Dynetek, OSHA, DOT, and customer-specific safety requirements at all times, including fall protection, traffic control (MUTCD), confined space, lockout/tagout, and PPE compliance.
- Participate in daily Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), tailgate/toolbox talks, and pre-job briefings; ask questions and report unsafe conditions immediately.
- Help set up and maintain proper work zone protection, signage, cones, and barricades on every job site.
- Inspect assigned tools, PPE, and equipment before each use; report any defects or damages to the Foreman.
- Complete all required apprenticeship training, safety courses, and certifications on schedule.
Equipment, Tools & Vehicles
- Learn the safe and proper operation of bucket trucks, digger derricks, cable pullers, trailers, and other fiber construction equipment under supervision.
- Maintain assigned tools, hand tools, and PPE in clean, working order; properly secure tools and materials at the end of each workday.
- Assist with daily vehicle and equipment inspections, fueling, and minor maintenance as directed.
Learning, Development & Teamwork
- Actively participate in on-the-job training, classroom instruction, and any structured apprenticeship program requirements.
- Demonstrate steady progress in technical knowledge, safe work practices, and field productivity through regular evaluations.
- Communicate clearly and respectfully with the Foreman, crew members, customers, and the general public.
- Support emergency restoration efforts as needed, including response to weather-related outages and unplanned service interruptions.
Required Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Age: Must be at least 18 years of age.
- License: Valid driver’s license with a clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR); willingness to obtain a CDL Class A or B within an agreed timeframe as a condition of advancement.
- Work Authorization: Authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
- Physical: Ability to perform the physical demands of the role, including working at heights up to 35 feet, lifting up to 50 lbs, and working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Attitude: Strong work ethic, dependability, willingness to learn, and ability to take direction.
- Communication: Effective verbal communication skills in English; ability to follow instructions and safety procedures.
- Background: Must successfully pass a pre-employment background check, drug screen, and DOT physical (if applicable).
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in fiber, telecom, electrical utility, construction, or other skilled trades.
- Completion of or enrollment in a technical school, lineman program, or fiber optic training course.
- OSHA 10 certification.
- CDL Class A or B at time of hire.
- First Aid / CPR and Flagger certifications.
- Familiarity with basic hand tools, power tools, and reading construction prints.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Work is performed primarily outdoors on active construction sites and roadways in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and humidity.
- Frequent standing, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, reaching, and lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs; occasional lifting up to 75 lbs with assistance.
- Working at heights (poles, bucket trucks) up to 35 feet and in confined spaces such as manholes and handholes.
- Exposure to traffic, energized utility environments, and standard construction site hazards; required use of company-issued PPE at all times.
- Travel within the Southeast region may be required, including overnight stays for storm response or out-of-area projects.

The Lineman Apprentice role is the entry point into Dynetek’s FiberCom field career ladder. With successful completion of required training, certifications, and on-the-job performance milestones, Apprentices can progress to Lineman, Senior Lineman, and ultimately Foreman. Dynetek supports advancement through structured mentoring, paid training, certification reimbursement, and clear performance criteria reviewed with the Foreman and Operations leadership.
