Position Summary
The Water & Streets Department Team Member performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks related to the operation, maintenance, repair, and improvement of the Village’s water distribution system, streets, stormwater infrastructure, parks, public properties, and other municipal facilities. Employees are expected to work safely, provide excellent customer service to residents, and support the Village’s mission of maintaining a clean, safe, and attractive community.
This position requires flexibility, teamwork, and the ability to respond to emergencies outside of normal working hours.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Water System Operations
- Maintain and repair the Village water distribution system.
- Repair water main breaks and service line leaks.
- Install and repair water meters.
- Read water meters as assigned.
- Exercise and maintain water valves and fire hydrants.
- Flush hydrants according to Village schedules.
- Collect water samples and assist with water quality monitoring.
- Assist with maintaining compliance with Illinois EPA regulations.
- Operate pumps, valves, wells, and related equipment.
- Assist contractors working on Village water infrastructure.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records.
Streets and Right-of-Way
- Repair potholes.
- Perform street patching and pavement maintenance.
- Maintain gravel roads and alleys.
- Install and repair street signs.
- Paint pavement markings.
- Repair sidewalks and curbs.
- Trim vegetation within street rights-of-way.
- Sweep streets.
- Assist with traffic control during emergencies and construction.
Stormwater and Drainage
- Clean storm drains and catch basins.
- Maintain culverts.
- Inspect drainage systems.
- Respond to localized flooding.
- Remove debris from drainage structures.
Snow and Ice Removal
- Operate snowplows.
- Spread salt and ice control materials.
- Clear Village parking lots.
- Remove snow from sidewalks when assigned.
- Respond during evenings, weekends, holidays, and overnight storms.
Parks and Public Property
- Mow grass.
- Trim trees and shrubs.
- Maintain playground equipment.
- Empty trash receptacles.
- Maintain park buildings.
- Assist with landscaping.
- Maintain Village Hall grounds.
- Assist with beautification projects.
- Set up and remove decorations for community events.
Equipment Maintenance
- Perform preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
- Operate trucks, tractors, skid steers, excavators, mowers, loaders, and other equipment.
- Report mechanical issues.
- Maintain tools and equipment in safe operating condition.
Community Support
- Assist during Village festivals, parades, and community events.
- Set up barricades.
- Install event signage.
- Respond professionally to resident concerns.
- Represent the Village in a courteous and respectful manner.
Emergency Response
Respond to emergencies including:
- Water main breaks
- Utility failures
- Storm damage
- Flooding
- Snow and ice events
- Fallen trees
- Traffic hazards
- Other emergencies as directed
Must be available for after-hours call-outs and emergency response.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid Illinois Driver’s License.
- Ability to obtain Illinois CDL (or possess at time of hire if required).
- Ability to obtain Illinois EPA Water Operator Certification within a specified period.
- Basic mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to safely operate power tools and heavy equipment.
- Ability to communicate effectively with residents and coworkers.
Preferred Qualifications
- CDL License.
- Illinois Water Operator License.
- Experience in municipal public works.
- Heavy equipment experience.
- Utility construction experience.
- Snowplow experience.
- Basic plumbing, electrical, or construction experience.
Physical Requirements
The employee must be able to:
- Lift up to 75 pounds regularly.
- Stand, walk, kneel, crouch, bend, and climb.
- Work in confined spaces when necessary.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Operate heavy equipment safely.
- Work around traffic and construction zones.
- Respond to emergency situations.

Work Schedule
Generally Monday through Friday during regular Public Works operating hours.
Must be available for:
- Emergency call-outs
- Water main breaks
- Snow and ice operations
- Severe weather response
- Weekend community events as needed

Pay: $25.00 - $32.00 per hour
