Junior AI Automation Engineer
Remote | Contract-to-ongoing | Part-time or full-time potential
About us
We’re a small, early-stage AI consultancy building practical bots, automations, and knowledge systems for businesses and nonprofits. Our work is less “chatbot demo” and more: connect real tools, organize messy workflows, build useful internal systems, and help teams save time. Typical projects involve Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack/Discord, Notion, Airtable, Google Workspace, CRMs, APIs, webhooks, and AI-assisted development. We’re looking for 1 to 3 junior engineers or technical builders who can help us move faster on client and internal projects. This will start as a contract role, with the potential for ongoing work if it’s a strong fit.
What you’ll do
You’ll help turn high-level ideas into working tools. Typical work may include:
- Building bots, automations, and internal tools using Python and APIs
- Connecting tools like Gmail, Google Calendar, Notion, Airtable, Slack, Discord, Canva, and Google Workspace
- Working with integration tools and protocols such as Composio, Zapier, MCP servers, and webhook-based systems
- Building within an existing bot/agent framework and getting comfortable in unfamiliar codebases
- Researching possible approaches, making a simple plan, and sharing tradeoffs before building
- Creating clear handoff notes so another engineer can understand what you built
- Iterating based on feedback from our founder, team, or clients
You do not need to be a senior engineer. You do need to be resourceful, clear, and comfortable learning quickly.
What we’re looking for
Required
- Solid foundation in Python
- Experience working with APIs, webhooks, JSON, and basic backend logic
- Comfort using AI tools like Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or similar tools as part of your development workflow
- Ability to work independently from a somewhat ambiguous prompt or project idea
- Strong written English
- Clear communication: you can explain what you’re doing, where you’re stuck, and what you need
- Willingness to work with existing codebases, not just start from scratch
Nice to have
Experience with any of the following is a plus, but not required:
- Notion, Airtable, Google Workspace, Slack, Discord, or Canva integrations
- Composio, Zapier, Make, or similar automation tools
- MCP servers
- Agent frameworks or bot frameworks
- Claude Code, Cursor, OpenCode, OpenHands, or similar AI-assisted coding workflows
- Building tools for small businesses, nonprofits, creators, or internal operations teams
How we work
We move quickly, but we care about clear communication. Our ideal working rhythm is simple:
- Make a short plan before building
- Ask smart questions when something is unclear
- Share a quick update when you start working
- Share what you completed, what is blocked, and what you plan to do next
- Document enough that someone else can pick up the work later
- You’ll work closely with our founder, who reviews work, gives direction, and handles final polish. Your job is to get builds most of the way there: working, understandable, and ready to review.
Who this is a good fit for
This role may be a good fit if you:
- Like building useful tools more than polished demos
- Are comfortable figuring things out without step-by-step instructions
- Can move fast without being sloppy
- Enjoy using AI tools to build faster, but still understand the code you’re shipping
- Are early in your engineering career and want hands-on experience with real automation and AI workflow projects
- This is probably not a good fit if you need a highly structured corporate engineering environment, detailed specs for every task, or a large team around you.
Details
- Remote
- Contract role to start
- Part-time or full-time potential depending on fit and availability
- We prefer candidates with strong overlap with U.S. working hours, especially Pacific Time
- Latin America time zones are especially convenient, but we’re open to candidates anywhere who can work with our schedule
- Rate depends on experience
Hiring process
We are not asking candidates to complete an unpaid or paid test project as the first step. Our process will likely include:
- Review of your application, portfolio, GitHub, or work samples
- Short intro interview
- Technical/work sample discussion
- Follow-up conversation if there seems to be a strong fit
- We care more about how you think, communicate, and build than whether you have a perfect resume.
To apply
Send a short note. No generic cover letter, please. Tell us:
- One automation, bot, integration, or technical tool you’ve built
- What tools or systems it connected to
- What your role was in building it
- One thing you would do differently if you rebuilt it now
- Links to any relevant GitHub, portfolio, demos, Loom videos, or work samples
Pay: $15.00 - $30.00 per hour
Application Question(s):
- Briefly describe one automation, bot, integration, or internal tool you’ve built. What problem did it solve, what tools did it connect to, and what was your role?
- Which APIs, platforms, or integrations have you worked with? For example: Google Workspace, Gmail, Calendar, Slack, Discord, Notion, Airtable, Zapier, Make, webhooks, OAuth, etc.
