Friends of Mine Cooperative Preschool is seeking a warm, dependable Assistant Teacher to join our small, play-based learning community for the 2026–2027 school year.
Friends of Mine is a cooperative preschool serving children ages 2–5 in a mixed-age classroom with no more than 10 children each day. Our cooperative model means teachers work alongside parent volunteers to create a nurturing environment where children learn through play, creativity, exploration, and supportive relationships.
We use the principles of Conscious Discipline to support children's social and emotional development and are looking for someone who shares a relationship-based approach to early childhood education.
Position Details
- Schedule: Monday–Thursday, 8:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m.
- Additional paid time: One paid hour each week for preparation and participation in a monthly evening parent meeting (Total 20 hours per week).
- Compensation: $18–19 per hour, depending on experience.
- We follow the Buncombe County Schools calendar for holidays
Responsibilities
Working alongside the Lead Teacher, the Assistant Teacher will:
- Help create a safe, joyful, and engaging classroom environment.
- Support children through play, exploration, daily routines, and self-care.
- Assist with circle time, art, outdoor play, and other classroom activities.
- Collaborate with the Lead Teacher to support children's individual needs.
- Build positive relationships with children, families, and the daily parent volunteer.
- Help lead the classroom when needed.
Qualifications
We're looking for someone who:
- Has experience working with young children (preschool, childcare, nannying, camps, education, or similar settings).
- Is warm, patient, dependable, and emotionally mature.
- Enjoys working collaboratively with families as part of a cooperative preschool community.
- Values play-based, child-centered learning.
- Can pass a background check.
- Is willing to obtain Pediatric First Aid and CPR certification within 30 days of hire. (Early Childhood Education coursework or experience is a plus.)
