Position Purpose
The Produce Manager is responsible for leading all aspects of the Produce Department to ensure exceptional customer service, product freshness, food safety compliance, sales growth, profitability, and team development. This position oversees daily department operations, manages inventory and shrink, drives merchandising excellence, and develops a high-performing team dedicated to delivering fresh, high-quality fruits and vegetables that exceed customer expectations.
Key Responsibilities Department Operations
- Oversee the daily operations of the Produce Department.
- Ensure department standards for cleanliness, organization, safety, and product quality are consistently maintained.
- Execute company programs, seasonal promotions, and operational initiatives.
- Maintain department readiness with appropriate inventory levels and product availability.
- Monitor department performance and implement operational improvements to increase efficiency and customer satisfaction.
Customer Service
- Deliver and promote exceptional customer service throughout the department.
- Assist customers with product selection, preparation suggestions, and produce-related questions.
- Resolve customer concerns promptly and professionally.
- Foster a customer-focused culture that drives satisfaction, loyalty, and repeat business.
- Ensure associates provide friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient service.
Merchandising & Product Presentation
- Maintain attractive, abundant, and visually appealing produce displays.
- Ensure displays are fully stocked, rotated, and merchandised according to company standards.
- Execute seasonal, promotional, and holiday merchandising programs.
- Maintain accurate pricing, signage, and promotional execution.
- Monitor sales trends and adjust displays and inventory levels to maximize sales opportunities.
Inventory Management & Shrink Control
- Manage inventory levels to support sales demand while minimizing excess product and shrink.
- Order produce products based on sales forecasts, seasonal demand, and department needs.
- Monitor product rotation to ensure freshness and quality.
- Conduct inventory counts and maintain accurate department records.
- Implement strategies to reduce shrink through effective ordering, handling, and merchandising practices.
Product Quality & Freshness
- Ensure all produce products meet company standards for freshness, quality, and appearance.
- Inspect products regularly and remove damaged or unsellable merchandise promptly.
- Monitor product handling, storage, and temperature control procedures.
- Maintain high standards for freshness throughout the sales floor and storage areas.
- Promote product knowledge and quality awareness among department associates.
Food Safety & Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all food safety, sanitation, health, and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain department sanitation schedules and cleaning procedures.
- Ensure proper product handling, storage, labeling, and display practices.
- Train associates on food safety and sanitation requirements.
- Address food safety concerns immediately and implement corrective actions as needed.
Leadership & Team Development
- Recruit, train, coach, and develop department associates.
- Establish performance expectations and provide ongoing feedback.
- Create schedules that align labor resources with business needs.
- Foster teamwork, accountability, and associate engagement.
- Support succession planning and employee development opportunities.
Financial Accountability
- Manage labor expenses and department operating costs.
- Monitor sales, gross profit, shrink, and productivity results.
- Develop action plans to improve financial and operational performance.
- Achieve departmental sales and profitability goals.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency while maintaining quality and service standards.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and workplace safety standards.
- Maintain a safe and organized work environment.
- Ensure associates are properly trained on equipment operation and safe work practices.
- Address safety concerns and operational issues promptly.
- Promote a culture of safety and accountability throughout the department.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous produce, grocery, retail, or related management experience preferred.
- Prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
- Knowledge of produce handling, merchandising, inventory management, and food safety principles.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Basic computer, scheduling, and reporting skills.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of products and supplies up to company standards.
- Ability to work in refrigerated and wet environments.
- Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, and repetitive hand movements.
- Ability to safely operate pallet jacks, carts, ladders, balers, and other department equipment.
