Job Duties
The Office of the Attorney General is seeking an Investigator in the Worker Protection Unit (WPU) within the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) of the Public Advocacy Division (PAD). The Public Advocacy Division manages the affirmative civil enforcement litigation of OAG to protect the public interest. WPU investigates and litigates civil cases to vindicate the rights of Virginia workers and to hold employers accountable for violations of Virginia law, including wage theft, worker misclassification, and unlawful denials of sick leave.
The Worker Protection Unit (WPU) Investigator will conduct investigations of complaints alleging violations of Virginia's labor laws, including the Virginia Minimum Wage Act, prevailing wage statutes, and worker misclassification statutes. The investigator will prepare draft investigative reports analyzing whether the facts of the investigation support filing a lawsuit. The investigator must be able to effectively gather and analyze payroll and employment records, interview complainants, witnesses, and respondents, compute back wages and damages, facilitate mediation efforts between the parties, and maintain and update case statuses and progress in WPU’s case management system.
Minimum Qualifications
- The ideal candidate will have a minimum of three (3) years of experience in investigating violations of labor laws.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required.
