Purpose of Job
The purpose of this classification is to thoroughly perform routine assessments of the nutritional status and dietary practices of WIC program participants.
Essential Functions:

Nutritional Assessment and Planning: Assesses and documents nutritional status, dietary practices, and nutritional and health risks for WIC participants by evaluating available data. Assesses adequacy of dietary intake and develops individualized nutrition care plans for WIC participants based on findings.

Documentation: Documents information accurately and concisely in TNWIC electronic system and any other applicable systems.

Anthropometric Measurements: Obtains, documents, and interprets anthropometric data (height, weight, hemoglobin) of WIC participants.

Nutritional Counseling: Provides individual nutrition counseling using Value Enhanced Nutrition Assessment (VENA) methods, actively listening to WIC participants and encouraging them to share information relevant to their nutritional status. Facilitates insight and supports participants in implementing positive behavioral changes.

Therapeutic Product Coordination: Determines participant eligibility for therapeutic products and collaborate with health care providers to determine nutrition-related needs.

Resource Connection: Refers WIC participants to additional community resources and provides nutrition education materials as needed.

Group Education and Food Demonstrations: Prepares and presents group nutrition education lessons and food demonstrations to WIC participants. Evaluates presentations for efficacy and uses group process techniques to provide a positive learning experience.

Policy and Procedure Compliance: Adheres to WIC Policy and Procedure Manual and regional procedures for all essential functions and responsibilities.

Professional Development: Participates in continuing education and training opportunities to enhance professional knowledge and skill development.

Staff Training and Student Precepting: Assist in training new employees and facilitating field experience for undergraduate and graduate nutrition students.
Required Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition or related field

Experience: Minimum of three (3) years' related experience

Preferences: Ability to communicate bilingually (English and Spanish)

Other Requirements: A minimum of six (6) semester-hours of coursework in nutrition; three (3) semester hours of human anatomy or physiology; and three (3) semester-hours in education, psychology or counseling are required. May be required to possess and maintain a valid TN State Driver's License and maintain automobile liability insurance that meets Tennessee’s financial responsibility law on personal automobile, depending on work assignment.

Pre-Hire Requirements:

A background check will be conducted prior to hire. Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) review will be conducted prior to being authorized to drive for county business.

Additional Job Functions:

Local and occasional overnight travel are required.

Occasional after hours/weekend work may be necessary.

Ensure regular, punctual attendance during scheduled work hours.

Respond to and report immediately if called upon by local, regional or central office supervisors, as part of a coordinated emergency response by the Knox County Mayor’s Office.
