POSITION SUMMARY: The School Counselor is responsible for supporting student success through the development and delivery of a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses students’ academic, career, and personal/social development. The School Counselor provides direct services to students through individual counseling, group counseling, student planning, crisis response, and preventive interventions. This position works collaboratively with administrators, teachers, families, and community resources to identify student needs, interpret student data, support educational and career planning, and promote a safe, supportive, and student-centered school environment.
ACCOUNTABILITIES: The School Counselor is accountable for implementing, monitoring, and evaluating a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with school goals, student needs, applicable laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the counseling profession. This includes maintaining a written counseling plan, using student academic, attendance, behavioral, and assessment data to guide interventions, documenting services and referrals, conducting follow-up, participating in professional development, and completing an annual program review or audit. The School Counselor is also responsible for communicating program goals and outcomes to appropriate stakeholders and ensuring that counseling services are delivered effectively, consistently, and in support of student achievement and well-being.
QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
EDUCATION/LICENSURE/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:
· Master’s degree in School Counseling and valid permanent NYS school counselor certification.
· Experience with high school student who are overaged and under-credited
· Commitment to ensuring academic success for all students.
· Excellent teamwork, work ethic, and organizational skills.
· Communicate effectively in English, both orally and verbally.
· Possess excellent integrity, a gentle spirit, and demonstrates strong moral character and initiative.
· Demonstrate technological abilities: word processing, data management, and informational retrieval.
· Maintain ongoing professional development.
· Subject to a criminal background check through the New York State Department of Education.
DUTIES & FUNCTIONS
ESSENTIAL:
· Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive school counseling program that supports students’ academic achievement, career readiness, and personal/social development.
· Create and maintain a written counseling plan aligned with school goals, student needs, and current school data.
· Provide individual and group counseling services to students who are mandated per IEP as well as “as risk” identified academic, behavioral, attendance, social-emotional, career, or personal concerns.
· Complete counseling reports for students with mandated counseling for annual/triennial reviews as well as participate in yearly IEP meetings.
· Deliver prevention-oriented activities, and responsive services to address student needs and promote student success.
· Facilitating workshops for students: Suicide awareness, anti-bullying, mental health awareness and others as needed.
· Teaching an Advisory Class every semester.
· Assist students with academic planning, career exploration, post-secondary planning, goal setting, and personal/social skill development.
· Monitor student academic performance, attendance, behavior, and overall progress, and assist with appropriate interventions.
· Accurately review, interpret, and utilize student data to identify needs, guide counseling services, measure progress, and support decision-making.
· Collaborate with administrators, teachers, families, guardians, and community partners to support student development, educational planning, and access to appropriate resources.
· Consult with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders regarding students with identified concerns and needs.
· Implement and maintain an effective referral and follow-up process for students requiring additional support or outside services.
· Provide staff, families, and stakeholders with appropriate information related to the school counseling program and available student supports.
· Assist teachers, parents/guardians, and other stakeholders in interpreting and understanding student data, student needs, and appropriate intervention strategies.
· Communicate regularly with assigned mentees and provide support, guidance, and follow-up as appropriate.
· Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential documentation of counseling services, interventions, referrals, follow-up, and student progress.
· Use available technology and school-based systems to enhance the delivery, documentation, monitoring, and evaluation of counseling services.
· Participate in professional development to maintain and improve knowledge, skills, and
best practices in school counseling.
· Collect, analyze, and report data related to counseling services, program goals, student outcomes, and areas for improvement.
· Support crisis response, prevention, and intervention efforts as needed, in collaboration with school leadership and appropriate support personnel.
· Adhere to all applicable laws, school policies, procedures, confidentiality requirements, and ethical standards of the school counseling profession.
· Perform other duties as assigned that are consistent with the role and responsibilities of the School Counselor position.
INTELLECTUAL REQUIREMENTS:
· Ability to understand, interpret, and apply school counseling principles, student support practices, and ethical standards in a school setting.
· Ability to remain current on best practices, regulations, and developments in school counseling, student support services, college/career readiness, and youth development.
· The position requires the ability to problem-solve independently and collaboratively in situations involving student academic progress, attendance, behavior, social-emotional concerns, and post-secondary planning.
· Ability to navigate competing priorities and make sound decisions under pressure.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
· Office environment with regular interaction across both campuses (Queens and Brooklyn).
· Occasional evening/weekend hours for Board meetings, deadlines, or urgent needs.
· Requires collaboration with all administrative departments.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / MISCELLANEOUS WORK:
· Prolonged periods of sitting, computer work, and document review.
· Ability to travel between multiple school sites.
· Occasional lifting of files or materials up to 20–25 lbs.
· Required to maintain confidentiality of student records with outside organizations and people, financial data, and sensitive information.
· Must pass criminal background and fingerprint clearance.
· May be asked to perform other related duties to meet organizational needs.
