Duties will vary for Veterinary Technician versus Veterinary Assistant
- Assist veterinarians during examinations, surgeries, and diagnostic procedures including radiology and laboratory work (technician)
- Handle animals safely using proper restraint techniques and animal handling skills to ensure their comfort and safety (both)
- Prepare and maintain medical equipment, including anesthesia monitoring devices, IV insertion tools, and radiology equipment (both)
- Perform laboratory tasks such as sample collection, and diagnostic testing to support accurate diagnoses (technician)
- Administer medications, and monitor surgical cases (technician)
- Support pet care activities like pedicures and maintaining cleanliness using aseptic techniques (both)
- Maintain detailed records of treatments, procedures, medication administration, and client communications using veterinary software (both)
Requirements
- Knowledge of veterinary terminology, animal physiology, anatomy, and veterinary surgical assistance practices (technician)
- Experience with anesthesia monitoring (including general anesthesia), and vascular access procedures such as IV insertion (technician)
- Proficiency in diagnostic radiology techniques including X-ray operation and radiology diagnostics (technician)
- Strong understanding of medication administration, and aseptic techniques (technician)
- Excellent communication skills for effective client interaction and team collaboration (both)
- Familiarity with veterinary laboratory work, medical equipment operation, and veterinary software systems (both)
