Position Summary
The Security Officer serves First United Presbyterian Church by helping maintain a safe, welcoming, and secure environment for the congregation, visitors, staff, church activities, and church property. This role supports worship services, meetings, programs, events, funerals, and other church functions by monitoring buildings and grounds, assisting guests, responding to concerns, and communicating promptly with church leadership and emergency services when needed.
Training and Qualifications
The Security Officer should have appropriate training, experience, and practical knowledge to provide a safe and secure environment. The individual must demonstrate good judgment, reliability, professionalism, the ability to remain calm in emergencies, and a respectful manner when interacting with members, visitors, staff, and community guests. High school diploma recommended, with past experience in security or law enforcement.
Accountability and Supervision
The Security Officer is accountable to the Session through the supervision of the Pastor and the Personnel Committee.
Essential Responsibilities
1. Patrol church buildings and grounds to ensure appropriate doors and windows are locked or unlocked as needed, and that lights are turned on and off during church functions.
2. Set up and break down meeting rooms and catering areas, including the safe storage of furniture and equipment.
3. Notify police and appropriate church points of contact in case of emergency, including break-ins, vandalism, theft, assault, or other disturbances.
4. Escort members and visitors to parking areas upon request and within a reasonable distance.
5. Help protect church buildings and grounds from unauthorized visitors and loiterers during church meetings, services, and events.
6. Provide information and direct members, visitors, and guests to the sanctuary and other meeting areas.
7. Cooperate with church members and officers by performing legal and church business-related duties when requested.
8. Support the safety of members and guests during church meetings, programs, services, and special events.
9. Enforce church rules regarding use of the parking lot.
10. Prepare written reports regarding activities, incidents, and disturbances occurring during the coverage period.
11. Be available at assigned times to allow members and guests access to the church.
12. Respond to alarm calls during non-service hours and wear a name tag identifying security personnel, preferably with a picture, or wear a uniform.
13. Maintain a clean and safe environment outside the property by identifying, removing, and disposing of trash or clothing.
Compensation and Schedule
Rate of pay: $20 per hour.
Regular schedule: 9.5 hours weekly, with additional hours as needed for programs, events, funerals, and other church activities.
Monday and Wednesday: 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Saturday: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Sunday: 9:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Working Relationships
The Security Officer interacts with the Pastor, Facilities and Maintenance Elder, Clerk of Session, Personnel Committee, members of the congregation, visitors, and other guests of the church.
