Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Surgical Technician (CST) to join our ophthalmology operating room team. In this role, you will assist surgeons and nurses during procedures, maintain a sterile field, prepare instrumentation, and ensure patient safety throughout the perioperative process. This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a surgical environment and wants to contribute to high-quality patient care.
Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to)
- Prepare operating rooms, instruments, and equipment according to departmental policies and procedures
- Don sterile gown and gloves; assist with draping and positioning patients
- Assist surgeons during ophthalmic procedures, including passing instruments, sponges, and sutures
- Maintain a sterile field and ensure all team members adhere to proper aseptic techniques
- Verify, prepare, and track medications and solutions used within the sterile field
- Handle all specimens safely
- Assist with application of dressings and post-procedure care
- Ensure instruments and equipment are properly cleaned, sterilized, and stored after use
- Support operating room clean-up and turnover following Universal Precautions
- Maintain accurate records of surgical procedures and instrumentation
- Assist with specialized ophthalmic instruments such as phacoemulsification machines, micro-instruments, and microscopes
- Prepare and load ophthalmic implants (IOLs) and other surgical materials under surgeon supervision
- Maintain accurate surgical counts of instruments, needles, sponges, and sharps specific to ophthalmic procedures
- Set up and operate ophthalmic lasers, cautery, and other specialized equipment as directed
- Assist with patient positioning to optimize surgical access while maintaining safety and comfort
- Participate in infection prevention, quality assurance, and safety initiatives
- Assist with inventory management, tracking ophthalmic surgical supplies, medications, and implants
- Stay current with ophthalmology surgical techniques, device updates, and regulatory requirements
Qualifications
- Nationally Certified Surgical Technician (CST) – active certification preferred
- Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program required
- Knowledge of operating room equipment, surgical procedures, anatomy, and correct terminology
- Ability to set priorities, recognize emergency situations, and respond appropriately under direction of the nurse in charge
- Ability to communicate effectively in English (speaking, reading, and writing)
- Ability to work independently, follow through on assignments, and collaborate with the surgical team
- Physical ability to move equipment, handle surgical instruments safely, and assist patients as needed
- Preferred: Experience or knowledge of ophthalmology surgical procedures
Hours
- Monday – Friday, approximately 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM (depending on facility needs)
