Responsibilities
- Safely operate transit vehicles such as buses, shuttle vans, and paratransit vehicles on designated routes through city streets and highways
- Conduct thorough vehicle inspections before and after shifts to ensure proper functioning and safety compliance
- Adhere to all traffic laws, transportation safety regulations, and Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements, including air brake systems and commercial driving standards
- Assist passengers with boarding and alighting, including those with special needs or mobility challenges, providing friendly and professional customer service
- Communicate effectively with dispatchers using two-way radios for driver communication and coordinate route adjustments as needed
- Navigate city streets efficiently while maintaining schedule adherence and passenger safety in all weather conditions
- Perform routine maintenance checks and report any vehicle issues promptly to maintenance teams
Skills
- Mechanical knowledge to understand vehicle systems and identify potential issues during inspections
- Proven experience in bus driving, shuttle driving, or delivery driving roles with a focus on safety and customer service
- Strong knowledge of traffic laws, traffic laws, city street navigation, and transportation safety regulations
- Familiarity with motor coach operations, school bus driving, limousine services, or paratransit operations is highly desirable
- Ability to operate air brake systems and adhere to DOT (Department of Transportation) regulations for commercial drivers
- Excellent communication skills for passenger assistance, especially when addressing passenger special needs or providing route information
- Experience with vehicle inspections, defensive driving techniques, and driving in adverse weather conditions
- Knowledge of the use of two-way radios for driver communication and coordination with team members
- Ability to handle passenger safety protocols diligently while maintaining a positive attitude in fast-paced environments
