The seasonal Park Maintenance employee is responsible for performing a variety of park and building labor duties to maintain, repair, and promote the Vernon Hills Park District. This position requires individuals to maintain parks and also interact with park patrons and remind patrons about ordinances within park property. This position typically works from May to August.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum age of eighteen years. Prefer basic knowledge of grounds maintenance and customer service experience. A valid Illinois State Drivers License is required. Candidate must be and remain free from drug and alcohol dependence.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Operation of Park District pickup trucks, tractors and mowers.

Building and restroom cleaning.
-
Removing all garbage and refuse materials from parks and playgrounds, including recycling waste.

Interacting with patrons and making notations of concerns.
-
Performing safety inspections and ensuring safety of patrons.
-
Checking permits for shelters and field usage.
-
Reporting damages and maintenance requests, including lights that are out.

Assisting with repair of park buildings, roofs, doors, windows, and electrical or plumbing work.

Perform other duties as assigned.
Secondary Job Functions

Turf maintenance, mowing and turf repair.

Ball field maintenance, dragging and marking lines on sports fields.

Assisting with horticulture tasks such as digging, planting, pruning, and removal.

General maintenance of playground amenities.

General road repair, asphalt patching and gravel road maintenance.

Perform other duties as assigned.
SAFETY AND RISK MANAGEMENT

Maintains a working knowledge of all general agency and departmental-specific safety rules.

Uses material handling equipment or staff assistance when lifting and or moving objects 50 pounds or heavier.

Reports any work-related or patron injuries to supervisor promptly.

Attends required safety program and in-service education meetings.

Corrects unsafe conditions and or reports them to supervisor.

Worker is exposed to outside weather conditions 90 percent of the time, including extreme heat and cold, snow, rain, and ice.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ACCOMMODATION
Workers are allowed and encouraged to use mechanical or manual assists for lifting above 50 pounds as a guideline. Working in teams also allows workers to have assistance with heavier activities at various sites.
