The Oscar Johnson, Jr. Enrichment & Recreation Center is seeking an energetic, motivated, and dependable Fitness Instructor to lead a variety of group fitness classes for youth, families, and adults. This position is responsible for planning and teaching safe, engaging, and inclusive fitness classes that promote health, wellness, and community involvement.
Classes may include cardio dance, cycling, beginner fitness classes, children’s fitness, and family wellness programs. The ideal candidate is enthusiastic about helping participants of all ages and fitness levels feel welcomed, encouraged, and successful.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan and lead safe, effective, and engaging group fitness classes.
- Teach a variety of formats including:
- Cardio dance
- Cycling/spin classes
- Beginner fitness classes for adults
- Children’s fitness programs
- Family fitness and wellness classes
- Modify exercises and routines to accommodate varying fitness levels, ages, and physical abilities.
- Create a welcoming and inclusive environment for participants.
- Ensure participant safety by demonstrating proper exercise techniques and monitoring class activities.
- Arrive prepared and on time for scheduled classes.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of fitness spaces and equipment before and after classes.
- Communicate effectively with staff, participants, and parents.
- Assist with promoting wellness initiatives, special events, and recreation programs.
- Report accidents, incidents, or equipment concerns to supervisors immediately.
- Enforce facility rules and safety procedures.
- Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous experience teaching group fitness classes preferred.
- Experience working with children and families preferred.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to motivate and engage participants of all ages and fitness levels.
Required Certifications
- Current Group Fitness Certification required through a nationally recognized organization such as:
- ACE
- AFAA
- NASM
- ACSM
- ISSA
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid Certification required or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of fitness principles, exercise techniques, and class instruction.
- Ability to safely demonstrate exercises and use fitness equipment.
- Ability to maintain positive relationships with participants and staff.
- Ability to adapt classes to meet participant needs and abilities.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and flexible schedules as needed.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to actively participate in and demonstrate physical fitness activities for extended periods.
- Ability to lift, move, and carry fitness equipment up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stretch, and perform repetitive movements during classes.
Work Environment
Work is primarily performed indoors in a recreation and fitness setting with occasional outdoor programming and special events. Evening and weekend hours may be required based on program schedules and community needs.
