St. Bernard School is seeking a dependable, hardworking, and detail-oriented Part-Time School Custodian to help maintain a clean, safe, welcoming, and well-organized campus for our students, faculty, staff, families, and visitors.
The School Custodian is responsible for the daily cleaning and upkeep of classrooms, restrooms, common areas, offices, outdoor spaces, and other school facilities. This position requires someone who can work independently, manage multiple responsibilities, identify maintenance needs, and take pride in maintaining a school environment that reflects the values and standards of St. Bernard School.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Clean and sanitize assigned school facilities, including classrooms, restrooms, offices, hallways, staff areas, library, parish hall areas, and other common spaces.
- Sweep, dust-mop, wet-mop, and vacuum floors, rugs, carpets, mats, and other surfaces.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, including sinks, faucets, toilets, urinals, mirrors, partitions, fixtures, and surrounding areas.
- Restock soap, paper towels, toilet paper, and other restroom supplies as needed.
- Empty waste receptacles, replace liners, and keep trash containers clean.
- Clean and sanitize drinking fountains.
- Wipe down doors, handles, counters, tables, windows, and other frequently touched surfaces.
- Remove marks, smudges, and other visible dirt from walls and surfaces.
- Maintain hallways, stairways, entrances, exits, and exterior walkways so they remain clean and accessible.
- Inspect light fixtures and exit lights and report or address maintenance concerns as appropriate.
- Keep janitorial closets clean, organized, and properly stocked.
- Maintain custodial equipment, including vacuums, mops, carpet-cleaning equipment, and other cleaning tools.
- Remove litter and debris from playgrounds, parking areas, walkways, outdoor eating areas, and school grounds.
- Help maintain outdoor areas, including playground equipment areas, landscaping, plants, trees, and surrounding grounds.
- Monitor and maintain cleanliness of trash cans throughout the campus.
- Assist with cleaning and maintaining the parish hall/cafeteria and related spaces as assigned.
- Assist with minor maintenance and repairs within the scope of the position.
- Notify school administration of safety concerns, needed repairs, damaged equipment, or maintenance issues.
- Monitor cleaning and custodial supplies and communicate replenishment needs to the designated school staff member.
- Assist with setting up or moving tables, chairs, equipment, and other materials for school activities or events when needed.
- Support special cleaning projects, school events, and other campus needs as assigned.
- Work cooperatively with other custodial and school staff to ensure all areas of the campus are properly maintained.
Qualifications:
- Previous custodial, janitorial, maintenance, or school facilities experience preferred.
- Ability to work independently and complete assigned duties with limited supervision.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness and safety.
- Dependable, punctual, and able to manage time effectively.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate professionally with school administrators, employees, students, parents, and visitors.
- Ability to recognize and report maintenance or safety concerns.
- Must demonstrate professionalism and respect for the Catholic identity and mission of St. Bernard School.
Physical Requirements
- The employee must be able to perform the physical duties associated with custodial work, including:
- Standing and walking for extended periods.
- Bending, reaching, kneeling, pushing, and pulling.
- Climbing stairs and using appropriate ladders when necessary.
- Moving custodial equipment, tables, chairs, and supplies.
- Lifting and carrying up to approximately 50 pounds.
- Working indoors and outdoors in varying conditions.
Work Schedule
- Monday–Friday
- 6:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
- Approximately 30 hours per week
Compensation: $18.00–$20.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.

Wage Range
The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
