SUMMARY
A Surgical Insurance Coordinator bridges the gap between surgical teams, patients, and insurance providers. They are primarily responsible for verifying insurance eligibility, securing prior authorizations, coordinating surgical bookings, and calculating patient financial responsibilities.
Responsibilities:
- Insurance Verification: Confirming patient coverage and benefits prior to the scheduled surgery date.
- Prior Authorizations: Collecting and submitting necessary medical documentation (like chart notes and clinical rationale) to secure required approvals from health insurance carriers.
- Patient Communication: Explaining insurance benefits, out-of-pocket costs, deductibles, and financing options to patients so they understand their financial obligations before the operation.
- Record Maintenance: Updating Electronic Medical Records (EMR) with accurate billing codes (e.g., CPT, ICD-10) and ensuring strict adherence to patient privacy regulations.
