Position Summary
Harvest Home Farmers Markets is seeking a reliable and organized individual to serve as both the Driver and Site Coordinator for our Brooklyn markets.
This position combines market transportation and on-site market management responsibilities. The employee will operate an HHFM cargo van to transport market equipment and supplies and will also serve as the primary Site Coordinator responsible for the day-to-day operation of assigned Brooklyn markets.
The ideal candidate is dependable, comfortable working independently, able to manage multiple responsibilities, and enjoys working directly with vendors, customers, and community members.
Key Responsibilities: Transportation & Vehicle Responsibilities
- Operate an HHFM cargo van to transport equipment, supplies, signage, and materials to and from Brooklyn market locations. Occasionally drive to the Harlem office for additional supplies.
- Follow established schedules and routes to ensure timely market setup and breakdown.
- Safely load, transport, unload, and organize market equipment and supplies.
- Maintain the cleanliness and proper condition of the assigned vehicle and equipment.
- Follow all local, state, and federal driving laws and safety regulations.
- Maintain a safe and compliant driving record throughout the season.
- Safely park the van at the designated location at the end of the market shift.
- Transport market reports, equipment, and materials back to the HHFM office as needed.
- Travel to other HHFM locations when needed to deliver supplies, post or remove temporary signage, or support special events and outreach activities.
Market Operations
- Serve as the primary Site Coordinator for assigned Brooklyn outdoor markets.
- Lead market setup and breakdown, ensuring the market is ready to operate on time.
- Coordinate vendor placement and assist with vendor load-in and site logistics.
- Maintain a clean, safe, organized, and welcoming market environment.
- Manage market operations from opening through closing.
- Assist with market research and demographic analysis for assigned locations in coordination with the HHFM office.
- Communicate with HHFM staff regarding operational issues, schedule changes, vendor concerns, or site needs.
Customer Service & Transactions
- Provide friendly and professional customer service to market visitors.
- Process and accurately record SNAP/EBT, OTC, credit/debit, and incentive program transactions, including Health Bucks and Senior Coupons.
- Answer customer questions and provide information about HHFM programs and services.
Administration & Reporting
- Attend monthly Site Coordinator meeting, usually held on Mondays during the 2nd or 3rd week of the month.
- Complete and submit daily market reports and required paperwork accurately and on time.
- Maintain inventory of market supplies, equipment, signage, and outreach materials.
- Securely transport market documentation and materials between market sites and the HHFM office.
- Report vehicle, equipment, safety, or operational issues promptly to HHFM staff.
Community Engagement
- Conduct on-site outreach, including distributing flyers and promoting HHFM programs.
- Collect customer information and other data as requested.
- Engage with local community organizations, municipal partners, and other stakeholders to build relationships and support market activities.
- Help create a welcoming, community-centered market environment.
- Represent Harvest Home professionally when interacting with vendors, customers, community members, and partner organizations.
- Assist with special events, outreach activities, and promotional efforts as assigned.
Qualifications & Skills
- Valid New York State driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Previous experience driving a cargo van or similar vehicle preferred.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Organized and detail-oriented with basic computer and reporting skills.
- Comfortable using GPS and navigation tools.
- Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and carry approximately 50–70 pounds and perform physical tasks including bending, reaching, standing, and walking for extended periods.
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and adapt to changing on-site needs.
- Comfortable interacting professionally with vendors, customers, and community members.
- Willingness to travel between Brooklyn market locations and other HHFM locations as needed.
- High school diploma or equivalent, or comparable work experience.
- Willingness to commit to the full market season (May–November).
Preferred, but not required:
- Experience working at farmers markets, community programs, food access programs, or similar settings.
- Knowledge of local produce and seasonal crops.
- Bilingual in Spanish or other multilingual skills.
Schedule
This position will work according to the assigned Brooklyn market schedule and will include both driving/transportation responsibilities and market coordination responsibilities on the same workdays.
Typical market day: Market hours are 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM, with additional time before and after the market for setup, transportation, and breakdown.
- Before Market: Pick up and transport equipment and supplies, arrive at the market, unload equipment, and complete setup.
- During Market: Coordinate vendors, manage market operations, process transactions, complete reporting, and engage with customers and the community.
- After Market: Break down the market, load equipment and supplies into the van, transport materials as required, and return equipment or reports to the designated location.
The schedule may vary based on market location and operational needs. Occasional special events, outreach activities, and assignments at other HHFM locations may require schedule adjustments or additional hours.
Training
The selected candidate must attend mandatory pre-season training and any additional training required for market operations, transactions, reporting, vehicle procedures, and safety.
