Position: Costume Shop Coordinator
FLSA Status: Seasonal Part-time, Independent Contractor
The Birmingham Children’s Theatre is seeking a Costume Shop Coordinator to join our creative and dedicated team. The Costume Shop Coordinator will oversee and execute the costume creation for all BCT productions, and manage the daily operations of the costume shop including maintaining costume stock and shop equipment, ordering supplies, supervising overhire stitchers, and other duties related to the execution of productions and related activities.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Production
- Oversee the operations of the costume shop to successfully execute costume, wig/hair, and make-up elements for up to 10 individual productions in a season.
- Coordinate with guest designers to realize their artistic vision of the costume, wig/hair, and make-up elements for each production
- Construct, alter, repair, maintain, launder, and properly store theatrical costumes.
- Coordinate and supervise overhire costume personnel in collaboration with the Director of Production.
- Attend dress rehearsals and supervise wardrobe crews when needed.
- Coordinate costume fittings in collaboration with the Costume Designer, ensuring fittings are scheduled and conducted efficiently. Facilitates the Costume Designer's participation in fittings, either in person or virtually, whenever possible.
- Coordinate space usage for cast dressing needs
- Strikes costumes after each production
- Performs other related duties as required.
Administrative:
- Makes recommendations to the Director of Production regarding purchases and repairs of equipment.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintain, organize, and Inventory BCT’s costume stock
- Manage costume rentals and costume sales in collaboration with Director of Production
- Backstage wardrobe and/or design work as needed and within the available work hours.
- Ensures safety standards in operations and equipment, performs preventive maintenance on equipment, and arranges for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma and 3 years of experience in costuming, sewing, or other related field
- Knowledge of techniques of costume construction and maintenance including but not limited to skills in making patterns, cutting, draping, sewing, dying and fitting costumes
- Working knowledge of theatrical, musical, and stage show technical techniques and requirements.
- Demonstrates the ability to balance multiple projects, meet deadlines, communicate, and
delegate effectively in a frequently flexible and quick-moving environment
- Creative problem solver who can deal with complex and ambiguous challenges
- Proficiency with Google Office Suite and Microsoft Office
- Experience with Wigs and Theatrical Makeup is preferred
- Costume Design experience is preferred
- Must be able to work some evenings and weekends when needed
The Costume Shop Coordinator reports directly to the Director of Production. All offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of a background inquiry.
START DATE: August 2026 (negotiable)
The Costume Shop Coordinator is a 36-week seasonal contract position and pays $15/hour with an average of 24 hours per week with flexible scheduling.
