The Operating Room RN supervises and directs patient care within a single operating room and performs circulating nurse duties according to established perioperative policies, procedures, and national standards. This role supports safe, efficient surgical care and ensures coordination among the surgical team.
Key Responsibilities
- Peri‑Operative Support
- Participate as a team member in support of the total peri‑operative process.
Operating Room Preparation & Safety
- Review and follow physician preference cards to prepare the OR for each procedure.
- Assemble, check, and provide all necessary equipment, supplies, and instruments.
- Maintain sterile technique and monitor for any contamination.
- Ensure a safe and sanitary environment, including noise and traffic control.
- Perform appropriate environmental cleaning between cases.
Patient Care & Intra‑Operative Duties
- Review patient medical records and coordinate care with the healthcare team.
- Provide comfort, reassurance, and support to patients; assist anesthesia staff as needed.
- Protect patient privacy and dignity throughout the surgical experience.
- Explain intraoperative processes to patients when appropriate.
- Transport patients safely to the OR, observing all policies and safety requirements.
- Complete surgical site preparation and position the patient per procedure and physician preference.
- Communicate patient status clearly to maintain continuity of care.
- Interpret and follow written and verbal orders accurately.
Documentation & Workflow Efficiency
- Document all patient care activities in the medical record according to policy.
- Organize time, equipment, supplies, and personnel to support efficient patient throughput.
- Delegate appropriate tasks based on staff skill level and scope of practice.
- Use supplies responsibly and suggest cost‑effective alternatives.
Other Duties
- Assist with inventory management and preparation for future surgical cases.
- Maintain order and cleanliness in the OR and related areas.
- Demonstrate willingness to cross‑train to other departments in the center.
- Oversee and coordinate nursing care in the OR during surgical procedures.
- Perform circulating nurse functions following established policies and national standards.
Required
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Missouri.
- BLS certification within 30 days of hire.
- Experience in an operating room setting or willingness to complete on‑the‑job circulator training.
Preferred
- ACLS and PALS certifications.
- Prior experience in an Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC).
