JOB TITLE: Camp Counselor
REPORTS TO: Program Director and/or as assigned
FLSA TYPE: Non-Exempt, Hourly
JOB PURPOSE:
Under the supervision of the Camp Director or Program Director, the Camp Counselor is responsible for the direct supervision, safety, and engagement of youth participants in YMCA camp programs. This role supports the YMCA’s mission by fostering a safe, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate environment that promotes character development, belonging, and positive youth outcomes.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (not a complete list):

Provide continuous, active supervision of assigned youth groups in accordance with YMCA supervision standards, staff-to-child ratios, and safety protocols.

Implement age-appropriate activities that support youth development, social-emotional learning, and positive behavior.

Enforce YMCA policies and procedures, including safety, emergency response, behavior guidance, child abuse prevention, and mandated reporting requirements.

Build positive, professional relationships with youth, families, and fellow staff; model YMCA values in all interactions.

Support youth leadership by encouraging problem-solving, decision-making, and reflection within daily programming.

Maintain program areas, equipment, and supplies to ensure a safe and welcoming environment.

Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures regarding the prevention of abuse.

Report any suspected abuse, neglect, or misconduct immediately to the appropriate supervisory staff.

Attend mandatory training on abuse prevention, including recognizing signs of abuse, and reporting requirements.

Required:
-
Must be at least 18 years of age
-
Experience working or volunteering with children ages 4–12.

Demonstrated ability to supervise youth in a group setting and manage behavior appropriately.

Current CPR/AED/First Aid/Oxygen certification (will provide upon hire).
