Position Summary:
An Underground & Earthwork Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate, competitive cost estimates and bid proposals for underground construction and utility projects. These projects may include water, sewer, storm drains, electrical conduit, tunneling, earthworks, and related civil infrastructure work. The estimator works closely with project teams, vendors, subcontractors, and clients to analyze plans and ensure bids are timely, compliant, and cost-effective.
Key Responsibilities
- Review construction drawings, specifications, and bid documents to understand scope, requirements, and risks.
- Perform quantity takeoffs and detailed cost analysis for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontracted work.
- Prepare complete and competitive bid proposals, cost models, and estimates.
- Solicit, evaluate, and negotiate pricing with suppliers and subcontractors.
- Maintain historical cost and pricing databases to improve estimate accuracy.
- Attend pre‑bid meetings, site visits, and walks to gather information and clarify project details.
- Coordinate with project managers, operations teams, and field staff to ensure estimates align with execution plans.
- Prepare bid packages, documentation, and submittals for submission.
- Monitor market pricing and adjust estimates based on current economic conditions and vendor inputs.
- Support value‑engineering efforts to improve cost efficiency and competitiveness.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred (or equivalent experience).
- Typically 3–10+ years of estimating experience in underground utilities, heavy civil, or utility construction. **Required**
Technical Skills
- Proficiency with estimating and takeoff software (e.g., Bid2Win, HCSS HeavyBid, Bluebeam, AGTEK, PlanSwift, digital takeoff tools).
- Strong knowledge of construction plans, specifications, and estimating techniques.
- Excellent math, analytical, and cost modeling abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word).
Soft Skills
- Strong communication and negotiation skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with cross‑functional teams.
Common Work Environment
- Office‑based estimating work with occasional field visits for site assessment and job walks.
- Work directly with project teams during bidding and pre‑construction phases.
May involve travel to client sites, subcontractor locations, and industry events.
