Adaptive & Recreational Riding Instructor
The Adaptive & Recreational Riding Instructor is a part-time position (15-20 hours/week) responsible for providing safe, engaging, and goal-oriented mounted and unmounted instruction to individuals with and without disabilities across adaptive and recreational riding programs. This role supports participants in developing riding skills, building confidence, enhancing physical and cognitive abilities, and fostering meaningful experiences through equine-assisted activities and horsemanship instruction.
Adaptive & Recreational Riding Instructors demonstrate strong horsemanship skills, an understanding of disability-inclusive practices, thoughtful lesson planning, and the ability to work collaboratively within an integrated team of instructors, volunteers, and equine professionals. This position reports to the Program Manager and to the Assistant Program Manager in their absence.
Essential Responsibilities
Lesson Instruction & Participant Support
- Conduct safe, effective mounted and unmounted adaptive and recreational riding lessons for individuals with and without disabilities and diverse support needs.
- Teach foundational riding skills, horsemanship, basic ring figures, arena patterns, and riding techniques appropriate to each participant’s abilities, goals, and experience level.
- Maintain accurate lesson notes and participant progress updates.
- Support participants in setting and working toward achievable goals within adaptive and recreational riding frameworks.
- Provide clear, compassionate instruction while maintaining a positive, inclusive, and engaging learning environment.
- Adapt teaching methods and communication styles to meet individual participant needs and learning styles.
- Put away any games or tools used during your lessons and help keep the program supplies closet area neat and tidy.
Equine and Arena Management
- Assess and manage equine behavior during lessons, ensuring the welfare and safety of both horse and participant.
- Identify horse body language and communication signals to appropriately adjust lesson activities as needed.
- Groom and tack horses and ensure proper fit and safe use of all tack and equipment for each participant.
- Identify and address student and equine challenges that arise during lessons.
- Assist in general arena setup, equipment organization, and maintaining a safe and organized lesson environment.
- Leave the arena ready for those using the arena after your lessons.
Volunteer Coordination
- Provide direction, feedback, and support to volunteers serving as sidewalkers, horse leaders, or lesson assistants.
- Communicate clearly regarding participant needs, lesson goals, and safety expectations.
- Foster a collaborative, respectful, and supportive atmosphere among volunteers, staff, and participants.
- Report any issues or concerns with volunteers to the Program Manager and to the Asst. Program Manager in their absence.
Safety & Emergency Preparedness
- Implement and uphold all safety policies and emergency procedures.
- Respond appropriately to emergency situations, including performing emergency dismounts and basic horse first aid when needed.
- Maintain awareness of participant, volunteer, and equine safety at all times.
Qualifications
- MA Riding Instructor License
- PATH Intl. CTRI or interested in pursuing
- CPR and First Aid certification
- Strong horsemanship skills and experience teaching riding lessons
- Experience working with individuals with disabilities or diverse learning and support needs preferred
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team-oriented environment
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
