Duties
- Safely operate buses across designated routes, including school, transit, and specialized transportation services such as wheelchair assistance and senior care transport
- Follow traffic laws, vehicle codes, and transportation safety regulations to ensure passenger safety at all times
- Conduct pre-trip inspections to verify vehicle condition, including checking brakes, lights, signals, and emergency equipment
- Assist passengers with boarding and exiting, providing support for individuals with mobility challenges or special needs
- Manage student discipline and behavior management to maintain a safe environment onboard
- Respond quickly to traffic changes or emergencies by implementing emergency stop procedures and emergency response protocols for transportation incidents
- Communicate effectively with passengers using clear language; utilize multilingual skills when applicable to serve diverse communities
- Complete detailed reports on routes, incidents, or vehicle maintenance issues; maintain accurate logs of daily activities and safety checks
- Ensure compliance with child care policies when transporting children; provide first aid or CPR if necessary during emergencies
Experience
- Proven experience operating commercial vehicles such as school buses or transit buses in accordance with state and local laws
- Knowledge of transportation safety regulations including emergency response procedures for transportation and passenger safety protocols
- Experience working with children or elderly populations is highly desirable, demonstrating patience and excellent behavior management skills
- Familiarity with wheelchair assistance techniques and paratransit service operations
- Strong communication skills in English; multilingual abilities are a plus for serving diverse communities
- Ability to perform heavy lifting when necessary for vehicle inspections or assisting passengers with mobility devices
- Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements; clean driving record required
- Understanding of school policies related to student discipline and childcare regulations; knowledge of traffic laws and vehicle codes
