Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Structural Steel Fitter to join our dynamic fabrication and construction team. In this role, you will be responsible for assembling, installing, and maintaining structural steel components with precision and adherence to safety standards. Your expertise will contribute to the successful completion of large-scale projects, ensuring that all steel structures meet rigorous quality and safety requirements. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work on diverse projects that challenge your mechanical knowledge and fabrication skills while fostering a collaborative team environment.
Responsibilities
- Interpret detailed mechanical blueprints, technical drawings, and fabrication shop drawings to accurately assemble steel components.
- Use measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and measuring tapes to verify dimensions and ensure precise fitting of steel parts.
- Operate various hand tools, power tools, plasma cutters, and welding equipment—including MIG, TIG, FCAW (Flux-Cored Arc Welding), and SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding)—to cut, weld, and assemble metal materials in accordance with AWS (American Welding Society) standards.
- Read and interpret structural blueprints and technical drawings to guide fabrication, assembly, and installation processes on construction sites or in fabrication shops.
- Measure, mark, cut, drill, and fit sheet metal and other metal materials for structural applications with accuracy using calipers, micrometers, and shop math skills.
- Assemble steel structures using appropriate welding techniques while adhering to safety protocols and quality standards.
- Collaborate with team members to ensure safe work practices on construction sites involving cranes and other heavy machinery.
- Maintain detailed documentation of work performed, including inspection reports, welding logs, and project progress updates.
- Follow all safety procedures diligently to prevent accidents or injuries during fabrication or installation activities.
Experience
- Proven construction site experience working with structural steel or metal fabrication environments.
- Demonstrated proficiency in blueprint reading and mechanical blueprint interpretation.
- Hands-on experience operating welding equipment such as MIG (Metal Inert Gas), TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas), FCAW (Flux-Cored Arc Welding), SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), along with plasma cutting tools.
- Skilled in the use of measuring instruments including calipers, micrometers, measuring tapes, and shop math for precise fabrication tasks.
- Familiarity with safety protocols related to working at heights with cranes or other lifting equipment on construction sites.
- Knowledge of metal materials used in structural applications including sheet metal fabrication techniques.
- Experience working within AWS standards for welding quality assurance.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings accurately for assembly or installation purposes.
- Mechanical knowledge combined with experience in machining or manufacturing environments is preferred.
