Position Summary
Janitors perform the hands-on cleaning, sanitizing, floor care, and trash removal that keep the Fort Buchanan Commissary ready for patrons each morning. Janitors work as a rotating team with three on-site each night, cross-trained to perform any of the three nightly positions (Patron Area, Outside Area, Break Rooms/Hallways).
Scope of Work
Nightly cleaning of the sales floor (32,273 sq ft of epoxy terrazzo), 4 restrooms, offices, hallways, break rooms, and aluminum floor grating. Trash removal from 55 receptacles. Weekly cleaning of 305 glass display doors. Monthly, quarterly, and annual deep-cleaning tasks including underneath gondolas, end caps, and high glass.
Required Qualifications
- Must be a resident of Puerto Rico (federal contract requirement).
- Able to communicate in English with commissary patrons (Spanish fluency expected).
- Prior commercial or institutional cleaning experience preferred but not required – we train.
- Reliable transportation and consistent attendance for overnight shifts.
- Clean background check and able to obtain Fort Buchanan installation access credentials.
- Willing to be cross-trained on all three janitor positions and on floor care equipment (auto-scrubber, burnisher, wet/dry vac).
Physical Requirements
- Able to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and reach for the full 5-hour shift.
- Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds (cleaning supplies, trash bags, equipment).
- Able to push, pull, and maneuver auto-scrubbers and burnishers.
- Able to work safely with approved cleaning chemicals while wearing required PPE.
- Able to work overnight hours, with a 5-night rotating schedule.
Pay: $15.59 per hour
