Why does the job exist?
This position is assigned to Navajo Lake State Park (NLSP). This position is primarily responsible for water and wastewater operations for the five NW Region parks. This position focuses on providing safe drinking water and maintaining park facilities, grounds and equipment. This position will also be responsible for general supervision, training and assigning jobs of seasonal and park volunteers. This position is responsible for monitoring park water plant operations throughout the NW Region and other locations as assigned. This position will develop and present water reports and data to the park, Region Office, NMED, and other stakeholders as necessary. This position will implement, track and monitor water and wastewater programs in order to provide information and data weekly, monthly and annually in order to effectively report and measure program success. This position will provide training and oversight for other technicians and staff to ensure safety and compliance.
How does it get done?
The applicant will be required to perform a myriad of duties to include operating various water systems, sampling water, sampling wastewater, maintaining water and wastewater facilities, and supporting park maintenance operations. The incumbent will be required to perform many of these duties in unpredictable and extreme weather conditions throughout the year. Responsibilities also include other assignments determined by park and region management to ensure the safety and success of Navajo Lake State Park and the NW Region as a whole.
- Inspects water systems in relation to environmental, safety, operations, and supply issues; perform routine maintenance tasks independently, and perform repairs or implements new systems under the guidance of co-workers with specialized expertise.
- Performs standardized and complex operations, inspections and maintenance of water and wastewater treatment facilities.
- Responsible for the safety of public water supplies and water and sewage treatment facilities; recommends designs and constructions of new treatment plants and/or changes to existing systems; are responsible for ongoing instruction in effective methods of operation; and oversee ongoing construction and repair of water and wastewater treatment facilities.

Minimum Qualification
Associate Degree from a Technical/Vocational school and one (1) year of experience as a water operator, water/wastewater operator, to include experience with construction, backhoe operation, construction inspection, buried pipeline repair, pump and equipment repair, pipe fitting and/or reading meters. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling three (3) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
All applicants for this position must be licensed in accordance with 66-5-59 NMSA 1978, as applicable or eligible for licensure in accordance with provisions 66-5-60 NMSA 1987. Applicants must become a licensed Commercial driver within one (1) year of hire. You must include your license or certificate number in the license section of the application form.
- Moderate to extensive travel in region/state wide area.
- Weekend and holiday work required.
- Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.
- Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
This position works outdoors 70% of the time and is exposed to machinery, adverse weather conditions, and some travel. This position is also administrative. Physical requirements include: sitting, walking, standing, bending, twisting, squatting, kneeling, reaching, repeated hand/arm/finger motion, climbing, driving, typing, manual and finger dexterity, lifting up to 75 pounds, pushing or pulling up to 90 pounds, carrying up to 75 pounds. The use of various hand and power tools is required on occasion. Requires working inside and outside, occasionally in adverse weather conditions, extreme cold or heat, for extended periods of time. Due to the nature of park work, there is a risk of injury, animal or insect bites, and exposure to infection, dust, allergens, chemicals and petroleum products. Ability to see at a distance and close-up, see colors and having good depth perception is essential. Ability to hear in quiet and noisy environments, as well as telling where a sound is coming from is essential. Ability to communicate through speech is essential. Shift work is required on weekends, holidays and during events held at the park or at another site. Emergency situations may arise requiring extended hours of work, or return to work after normal hours. Sitting at a desk or computer workstation is essential.
