DEPARTMENT: Clinical Laboratory – Chemistry, Coagulation, Hematology, Microbiology, Urinalysis
HOURS: M-F, 9AM - 5:30 PM
JOB PURPOSE: This position is for an on-site Technical Supervisor for the clinical laboratory for supervision of waived and non-waived testing. The Technical supervisor will oversee staffing, workflow, instrument maintenance and the QA/QC program to ensure that high quality reproducible results is produced and maintained to CLIA and COLA standards. The Technical Supervisor is responsible for evaluating the capabilities of the testing personnel and the general supervisor's testing performance.
The candidate must have a strong background in immunochemistry, hematology, urinalysis and coagulation lab operation, maintenance, and validations. Experience with microbiology is desired. The candidate must be CLIA/COLA qualified at a technical supervisor level for the state of Michigan.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities - Include but are not limited to the following (other duties may be assigned to meet business needs):
· Is responsible for day-to-day supervision or oversight of the department operation and personnel performing testing and reporting results
· Is accessible to testing personnel at all times testing is performed to provide on-site, telephone, or electronic support
· Must be on-site to provide direct supervision when high complexity testing is performed by certain individuals
· Comply with established federal, states, and departmental policies and procedures, including: CLIA, OSHA, HIPAA, safety, compliance, quality improvement, environmental, and infection control.
· Perform general maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of instrumentation including appropriate documentation.
· Monitor test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained
· Ensure patient test results are reported only when the systems are functioning properly.
· Identify problems with instrumentation or data that may adversely affect resulting of patient reports.
· Follow and perform laboratory procedures for maintaining records of patient results and the test system including maintenance records.
· Communicate with providers, staff and other health care personnel concerning laboratory results, procedures, technology, and related issues or questions.
· Troubleshoot current assays. Resolve technical problems and ensures remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
· Assist the laboratory staff in the coordination and processing of specimens and provide technical training and support to staff.
· Evaluate the competency of all testing personnel on an ongoing basis
· Participate in continuing education and laboratory developed in-service programs.
· Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control and assurance policies and document quality control activities.
· Establishes or maintains a quality control program appropriate for the testing performed. Monitor quality control program(s) to ensure that acceptable levels of analytical performance are maintained for each test system.
· Maintain inventory of reagents/ solvents/ test kits and any instrument parts that are needed on site.
· Ensure that proficiency testing is conducted in a timely, accurate, and regulatory compliant manner, and reviewed by appropriate staff.
· Assist with maintaining the LIS by proactively identifying improvements, workflow enhancements and problems.
· Additional responsibilities below if delegated by the Lab Director such as:
o Ensuring that the test methodologies selected have the capability of providing the quality of results required for patient care
o Verifying procedures used are adequate to determine the accuracy, precision, and other pertinent performance characteristics of the method
o Ensuring laboratory personnel are performing the test methods as required for accurate and reliable results
o Ensuring that the laboratory is enrolled in an HHS-approved proficiency testing program for the testing performed
o Confirming proficiency testing samples are tested as required
o Confirming PT results are returned within the timeframes established by the proficiency testing program
o Ensuring all proficiency testing reports received are reviewed by the appropriate staff to evaluate the laboratory's performance and to identify any problems that require corrective action
o Enforcing an approved corrective action plan is when any proficiency testing result is found to be unacceptable or unsatisfactory
o Ensuring that the quality control and quality assessment programs are established and maintained to assure the quality of laboratory services provided and to identify failures in quality as they occur
o Establishing and maintaining acceptable levels of analytical performance for each test system
o Providing orientation to all new testing personnel
Technical Supervisor - High Complexity – QUALIFICATIONS
For Immunohematology, Immunology, Chemistry, Hematology:
1. Licensed MD/DO/DPM AND certified in clinical pathology OR 1 year laboratory training or experience in the high complexity testing specialties performed.
2. Doctoral degree in a laboratory science*. AND 1 year laboratory training or experience in the high complexity testing specialties performed
3. Master’s degree in a laboratory science*AND 2 years laboratory training or experience in the high complexity testing specialties performed.
4. Bachelor’s degree in a laboratory science* AND 4 years laboratory training or experience in the high complexity testing specialties performed
For Microbiology subspecialties:
1. Licensed MD/DO/DPM AND certified in clinical pathology OR 1 year laboratory training or experience in high complexity microbiology with a minimum of 6 months in subspecialty of service.
2. Doctoral degree in a laboratory science*. AND 1 year laboratory training or experience in the high complexity microbiology with a minimum of 6 months in subspecialty of service.
3. Master’s degree in a laboratory science* AND 2 years laboratory training or experience in high complexity microbiology with a minimum of 6 months in subspecialty of service.
4. Bachelor’s degree in a laboratory science* AND 4 years laboratory training or experience in high complexity microbiology with a minimum of 6 months in subspecialty of service
* Acceptable degrees are biological, chemical or laboratory science degrees. In some cases, COLA may request transcripts to evaluate the curriculum. For degrees other than biology, chemistry or laboratory science, specific semester hours of applicable coursework or an approved thesis or research project related to laboratory science is required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed in a general office setting and sanitized laboratory environment. Employees must wear appropriate professional clothing, lab coat, face protection and gloves when in the lab.

The employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform work activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operating of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices. The employee within this position may be subject to vibration, certain hazards due to exposure to chemicals, noise, and atmospheric conditions.
