State CDL ExaminerPosition Summary
We are seeking a professional, detail-oriented, and safety-focused State CDL Examiner to join our team. The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of commercial motor vehicle operations, Indiana CDL regulations, and FMCSA standards. In this role, you will conduct official CDL skills examinations for applicants seeking a Commercial Driver's License while ensuring every examination is administered fairly, consistently, and in accordance with state and federal regulations.
As a State CDL Examiner, you will serve as a representative of the Indiana CDL testing program, maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and public safety.
Responsibilities
- Administer official CDL Skills Examinations, including:
- Vehicle Inspection (Pre-Trip Inspection)
- Basic Vehicle Control Skills
- On-Road Driving Test
- Evaluate applicants using Indiana BMV and FMCSA testing standards and scoring criteria.
- Ensure all examinations are conducted safely, fairly, consistently, and without bias.
- Verify applicant identity, testing eligibility, and required documentation prior to testing.
- Accurately complete and maintain all examination records, score sheets, and required state documentation.
- Identify and document critical safety violations and automatic test failures in accordance with state regulations.
- Explain testing procedures and expectations to applicants while maintaining a professional testing environment.
- Maintain confidentiality of applicant information and testing materials.
- Ensure testing vehicles meet safety requirements prior to conducting examinations.
- Remain current on Indiana BMV policies, FMCSA regulations, CDL testing procedures, and examiner certification requirements.
- Participate in required examiner training, audits, recertification, and continuing education.
Qualifications
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with an excellent driving record.
- Minimum commercial driving experience as required by Indiana BMV examiner qualifications.
- Strong knowledge of FMCSA regulations, CDL licensing standards, and commercial vehicle safety.
- Ability to objectively evaluate driver performance while maintaining consistency and impartiality.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
- Professional demeanor and ability to work independently.
- Proficient with computers and electronic recordkeeping.
- Ability to obtain and maintain State CDL Examiner certification (if not currently certified).
- Must meet all Indiana BMV and FMCSA eligibility requirements for CDL Examiners.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current or previous State CDL Examiner certification.
- Experience conducting CDL skills examinations.
- Experience as a CDL instructor, fleet safety trainer, or commercial driver trainer.
- Knowledge of Indiana CDL testing procedures and regulations.
- Experience operating a variety of commercial vehicles, including:
- Tractor-Trailers (Combination Vehicles)
- Straight Trucks (Class B)
- Passenger Vehicles (Bus)
- School Bus
- Tank Vehicles
- Doubles/Triples (knowledge preferred)
