Duties
- Safely operate school buses and paratransit vehicles, ensuring timely pick-up and drop-off of students according to designated routes and schedules
- Follow all traffic laws, vehicle codes, emergency response procedures, and school policies to maintain a safe transportation environment
- Conduct pre-trip inspections of vehicles to identify mechanical issues, ensure safety equipment is functional, and perform necessary maintenance checks
- Manage student behavior on buses through effective behavior management techniques while maintaining a friendly and professional demeanor
- Respond quickly to traffic changes or emergencies with appropriate defensive driving techniques, including emergency stop procedures and quick response actions
- Communicate clearly with students, parents, school staff, and dispatchers using strong communication skills; provide assistance to children with special needs or childcare requirements
- Complete detailed reports on routes, incidents, vehicle condition, and student attendance as required by transportation policies
Skills
- Proven experience in bus driving or commercial driving with knowledge of heavy lifting and vehicle operation
- Familiarity with traffic laws, vehicle codes, emergency response procedures for transportation safety, and defensive driving strategies
- Ability to respond swiftly to traffic changes or emergencies using quick decision-making skills; knowledge of emergency stop procedures is essential
- Strong communication skills in English; bilingual abilities are a plus for serving diverse communities
- Experience working with children or in childcare environments; understanding behavior management techniques is highly valued
- Mechanical knowledge for basic vehicle troubleshooting and maintenance awareness
- Customer service orientation with the ability to handle multiple responsibilities professionally; experience in teaching or writing skills enhances interaction quality
- Multilingual capabilities including proficiency in languages other than English are advantageous for engaging with diverse student populations
