BASIC FUNCTION:
Under direct supervision, this temporary position (August – December) performs routine laboratory tasks such as organizing biological samples, reviewing submission forms and preparing samples for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) testing. Must meet physical eligibility requirements for working in a BioSafety Level-2 (BSL-2) environment.
Primary Tasks:
- Organize Samples: Ensure proper handling and organization of all specimens.
- Review Submissions: Assist in reviewing and processing submissions for testing.
- Cut and Trim Tissues: Prepare submitted tissues for CWD testing. (90%)
- Diagnostic Support: Perform various tasks related to the diagnostics of CWD.
- May perform simple, routine, and repetitive laboratory tests and procedures as directed.
Scheduling Requirements:
- Shifts may vary but must be able to work a minimum of 10 hours weekly between August through December. Shifts will be during WADDL business hours: Monday – Friday, between 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, up to full time during peak season.

Work Conditions
- Most work is conducted in a BSL-2 laboratory environment, but interactions in employee workplaces are periodically necessary.
- Conditions may include exposure to chemicals and biohazardous materials.
Physical Requirements
- May require light lifting up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis.
- Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
- Ability to use hand(s) for repetitive work: single grasping, pushing & pulling and fine manipulation on a daily basis.
- Speech, visual and hearing abilities that are sufficient to read and view written materials and effectively communicate and interact with WSU staff and the public – both in person and over the telephone.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
One year’s experience as a Laboratory Assistant 1.
