Tonganoxie Police Department is a smaller law enforcement agency in Tonganoxie, KS. An employee of this classification performs duties related to public safety through enforcement of laws and ordinances, public education, and hazard correction.
The police officer position does not require a current law enforcement certification upon hire. In the absence of a law enforcement certification, the candidate will have to complete 14 weeks of training at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (police academy), located in Hutchison, Kansas. Academy training is Monday-Friday, and the candidate will have to stay on-site during the week; however, will return home on the weekends.
Upon completion of the academy, or upon hire (if currently certified), an officer will be responsible for patrol, criminal investigations, or staff services assignment.
Pre-certified law enforcement certification from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training (CPOST) is preferred, as well as officers who have experience or training in an alternate law enforcement field. Police Officers work under direct supervision and guidance of rules, regulations, and other training, but often work alone. They must exercise independent judgment in carrying out duties. Community Policing and outreach is an important element of this position, as well as writing official reports.

- Patrol the city to preserve law and order, discover and prevent the commission of crimes, enforce state laws and city ordinances, and take proactive measures to deter crime.
- Respond to public service calls and any report of a felony or misdemeanor crime.
- Enforce traffic laws, ordinances, conduct traffic patrol, and conduct traffic accident investigations.
- Contact and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in applicable matters.
- Maintain contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement problems, and preserve good relationships with the general public; take an active role in areas of public education relative to crime and crime prevention; make public presentations as assigned.
- Act as a first responder to emergency medical incidents until EMS arrives.
- Investigate crimes; gather and preserve evidence; interview victims, complainants and witnesses; identify and interrogate suspects; apprehend and arrest offenders; testify and present evidence and testify in court.
- Prepare reports on arrests, activities performed, and unusual incidents observed.
- Maintain custody of prisoners; transfer prisoners to holding facility.
- Perform a variety of special projects and other duties as assigned.

Pay: $25.48 - $27.48 per hour
