Summary of Position:
The Emergency Room CNA/Ward Clerk position supports patient care delivery by providing effective communication and customer service skills, documentation/organization of medical information and as representative of the department and the hospital to visitors, vendors and the public. This individual must be a patient advocate with the ability to multi-task, maintain information and the medical records in an orderly manner while prioritizing the needs of a busy department.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities :
1. Supports Mission and Vision of CBH.
2. Supports and adheres to Nursing and Hospital Policies and Procedures.
3. Establishes and maintains a safe, organized, and orderly work environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations and adhering to infection-control policies and procedures. Note: Wears proper PPE as indicated.
4. Participates in the orientation of new personnel, including 1 st time temporary personnel.
5. Attends monthly Nursing staff meetings (50% required).
6. Attends work regularly and aware of the nursing schedule.
7. Communicates through the TEAMS messaging center as needed, yet calls in if ill-to the Charge RN. Reads TEAMS messages on a daily basis as this is the hospital’s approved communication tool.
8. Completely all educational requirements as assigned.
9. Maintains BLS certification on-going.
10. Assists with receiving patients in the ED, connecting the patient to the vital signs machine and obtaining a body temperature as the nurse directs. This also requires associating the vital signs monitor to the Cerner on-line documentation system. When the patient departs, this position will disassociate the patient from the on-line documentation system.
11. Performs patient registrations after the patient has had a quick registration and the patient is stable. If the patient is a minor, the parent or guardian will need to be contacted for signing. If phoned permission for any treatment is obtained, there will be two (2) witnesses to the phoned consent and sign accordingly.
12. Informs nurses of reports or requests from other departments.
13. Answers call lights/door intercom promptly and safely.
14. Possesses excellent customer service skills. Greets visitors, in person or on the telephone, answers inquiries, relaying calls, gives directions, refers inquiries to nursing and medical staff as indicated. NOTE: will never give phone advise.
15. Maintain department office/medical supply inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level (medical supplies according to PAR level), anticipating needed supplies, and ordering as needed.
16. Collects samples, labels samples and deliveries samples to the laboratory for processing.
17. Cleans patient rooms and restocks ongoing.
18. Cleans the patient ice chest and records cleaning on a monthly basis in the SQSS system.
19. Cleans the patient/staff refrigerator monthly and records such on the SQSS System.
20. Reads and records refrigerator/warmer temps on a daily basis on the SQSS System.
21. Helps the nurse with all transfers: Calling for transport EMS/Flight Crew as ordered, prints two (2) chart packets for: the receiving hospital and the transferring team.
22. Reviews fax cues and send the information to the chart or to HIM for placing in the chart.
23. Assists nurses with monthly supply outdate checks and record in the SQSS System.
24. Assists with year-end inventory as requested.
25. Performs other duties as assigned.
High school diploma or equivalent and BLS are required. CNA certification is preferred. The ward clerk must have sufficient knowledge of English, spelling and math to compile reports, make out requisitions, maintain simple records and perform various clerical tasks. The ward clerk must have knowledge of medical and technical terminology. The ward clerk should have good communication skills and mental and physical health sufficient to meet the demands of the position.
