POSITION TITLE: Itinerant Teacher/Building Substitute

JOB DESCRIPTION: This is a full-time, 187-day, exempt position serving as an itinerant teacher and building substitute. Responsibilities include assessing the educational performance of students who are deaf and hard of hearing to determine appropriate educational programming with an IEP team; planning, preparing, and facilitating specialized instruction to optimize language and communication development according to students’ IEPs; and adapting teaching methods to meet the needs of individual students. When serving as a building substitute, responsibilities include planning, preparing, and presenting appropriate academic work to students; using appropriate communication techniques to assure clarity and accuracy of conveyed information; managing the classroom effectively to encourage student participation, minimize distractions, and maintain a positive learning environment; and providing instructional coverage for classrooms as assigned. Additional responsibilities include attending professional development, in-service, and departmental meetings to maintain current knowledge in the field and gain new understanding of techniques and methodologies in education. The individual will act as a liaison to school-based instructional staff and personnel; collaborate with staff regarding students’ needs to ensure students receive appropriate programming according to their IEPs and communication plans; maintain records, data, IEP information, and log information into a database for the LEA to monitor IEP progress; and perform communication equipment checks as needed to ensure all devices, such as AAC devices, function properly. The individual will supervise students in and out of classrooms, hallways, and during transitions to other classes and will provide instructional support and classroom coverage as needed throughout the school. The position requires flexibility to respond to the daily instructional and staffing needs of the school.
This position is subject to a three-year probationary period, during which performance and suitability will be closely evaluated.
QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Deaf Education with certification in Deaf Education. PA Instructional I or II certification in Deaf Education required. SIGNING REQUIREMENTS: The Sign Language Proficiency Interview for the position is “Advanced.”
The minimum level accepted at hire is “Intermediate.” CLEARANCES REQUIRED: PA Criminal Background, PA Child Abuse, and FBI Clearance required. CPR/First Aid training certification required.
