Position Title: Bioinformatics Scientist, Full-Time (4 Positions)

VMG is seeking four (4) Bioinformatics Scientists to support the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). This position provides advanced bioinformatics support to accelerate institute research programs with a primary emphasis on single-cell and spatial omics data analysis. The Bioinformatics Scientist will independently develop computational strategies, perform statistical and machine learning analyses, integrate large-scale multi-omics datasets, and collaborate with multidisciplinary investigators to generate biologically meaningful insights that advance environmental health research.
- Serve as a bioinformatics subject matter expert supporting single-cell, spatial omics, and multi-omics research initiatives.
- Design, develop, optimize, and maintain computational pipelines for single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), spatial transcriptomics, and other next-generation sequencing analyses.
- Analyze, integrate, and interpret large-scale, high-dimensional biological datasets to generate meaningful scientific conclusions.
- Develop custom software applications, scripts, algorithms, and computational workflows using reproducible bioinformatics methodologies.
- Generate and optimize programs that organize, integrate, and mine complex genomic and transcriptomic datasets.
- Collaborate with investigators, statisticians, computational biologists, and laboratory scientists to design experiments and develop analytical strategies.
- Provide guidance on computational methods, statistical analyses, and experimental design to support research projects.
- Evaluate and implement analytical approaches for preprocessing, quality control, clustering, differential expression, integration, and downstream analysis of single-cell datasets.
- Perform computational analyses using publicly available genomic datasets and integrate findings with internally generated research data.
- Develop and maintain bioinformatics infrastructure, software applications, databases, and computational resources supporting scientific research.
- Prepare scientific reports, progress reports, manuscripts, publication-quality figures, graphs, presentations, and technical documentation.
- Maintain detailed documentation of computational analyses, workflows, pipelines, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Present research findings during laboratory meetings, scientific conferences, and professional workshops.
- Train investigators, students, and laboratory personnel on bioinformatics software, computational tools, analytical pipelines, and statistical methodologies.
- Evaluate emerging bioinformatics technologies, computational tools, and scientific literature to identify innovative approaches supporting future research initiatives.
- Master's degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Biology, Environmental Science, Genetics, Molecular Biology, or a related scientific discipline.
- Minimum of three (3) years of relevant bioinformatics experience.
- Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, or a related biological or life science discipline is highly preferred.
- Demonstrated expertise in single-cell analysis, including scRNA-seq, scATAC-seq, scMultiomics, and spatial transcriptomics.
- Experience performing next-generation sequencing (NGS) analyses, including Bulk RNA-Seq, RNA-Seq, microarray analysis, genome-wide association studies (GWAS), and multi-omics integration.
- Experience with statistical modeling, machine learning, and large-scale biological data analysis.
- Proficiency with R, Python, MATLAB, Linux/Unix, Java, Shell scripting, PERL, Bash, SAS, Bioconductor, Seurat, Scanpy, cloud computing platforms, and high-performance computing (HPC) environments.
- Experience developing reproducible analytical pipelines and computational workflows.
- Strong analytical, scientific writing, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary scientific teams.
- Experience supporting NIH or other federally funded biomedical research programs.
- Experience developing computational infrastructure for genomic, transcriptomic, and multi-omics research.
- Experience integrating single-cell, spatial transcriptomics, and other omics datasets.
- Experience developing custom algorithms and software applications for biological data analysis.
- Experience contributing to peer-reviewed scientific publications and presenting research at national or international scientific conferences.
- Experience providing technical training and mentoring in bioinformatics methodologies.
- Full-time position (40 hours per week).
- Monday through Friday schedule.
- Position is located at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.
- Telework is available in accordance with government approval.
