Title: Azure SQL Database Architect
Location: Frisco, TX (5-Days Onsite)
Duration: Long Term
Role Overview: We are looking for a hands-on Azure SQL Database Architect to lead a targeted refactoring and optimization engagement. You will independently audit the current database implementation, redesign database objects for performance, and deliver validated before-and-after benchmarks covering functionality, execution time, and CPU/memory resource utilization. This is a results-driven, onsite role. You will own the full lifecycle of each change — from analysis through implementation, testing, and sign-off — communicating findings clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Audit and document existing stored procedures, indexes, schemas, and database object designs
- Refactor T-SQL stored procedures for correctness, maintainability, and performance
- Redesign database objects — tables, views, indexes, constraints — to reduce I/O andimprove throughput
- Design and execute regression and performance test suites to validate all changes
- Produce before-and-after benchmarks: execution time, CPU usage, memory consumption, and query plan comparisons
- Validate functional parity between original and refactored implementations
Job Description
- Document all changes with clear rationale and measurable outcomes
- Transfer knowledge to the internal team to ensure long-term maintainability
REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Deep expertise in Azure SQL Database and T-SQL development
- Strong command of query optimization — execution plans, statistics, index strategies, and query hints
- Proficiency with Azure monitoring and performance tools: Query Store, DMVs, Azure Monitor, and Extended Events
- Demonstrated experience redesigning database schemas for performance at scale
- Ability to establish and run structured testing and benchmarking workflows independently
- Strong written and verbal communication for technical documentation and stakeholder reporting
- Proven track record of delivering measurable performance improvements in production Azure SQL environments
NICE TO HAVE
- Data warehouse modeling, data lake architecture, or data profiling experience
- Azure Synapse Analytics or Azure Data Factory exposure
- Columnstore indexes, partitioning strategies, or in-memory OLTP
- CI/CD pipelines for database deployments
- dbt or similar data modeling tools
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
- All targeted stored procedures refactored with measurably improved execution time and resource utilization
- Database objects redesigned with documented rationale and confirmed functional parity with the original implementation
- Full benchmark report comparing before-and-after: query duration, CPU, memory, I/O, and query plan quality
- Zero regressions — all existing functionality validated through structured, repeatable testing
- Knowledge transfer documentation enabling the internal team to maintain and extend all changes going forward
