Industrial Controls Designer & PLC Programmer
Education:
- Preferred: Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, Automation, Controls, or a related technical field.
- Required: Equivalent industry experience will be considered in lieu of formal education.
- Preferred: AutoCAD Electrical certification or demonstrated proficiency.
Experience:
- Required: Minimum of 2–5 years of experience designing industrial electrical control systems.
- Required: Experience creating electrical panel layouts, one-line and three-line schematics, wiring diagrams, and bill of materials.
- Preferred: Experience within aggregate, mining, concrete, asphalt, manufacturing, water treatment, or industrial processing facilities.
- Preferred: Experience commissioning control systems in the field and providing startup support.
Technical Skills:
- AutoCAD Electrical: Advanced proficiency creating electrical drawings, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, terminal layouts, and detailed fabrication packages.
- Electrical Design: Design industrial control panels, MCC interfaces, power distribution, motor controls, instrumentation, and field wiring systems.
- One-Line & Three-Line Schematics: Produce accurate electrical distribution drawings for industrial facilities.
- Plant Layouts: Develop plant electrical layouts including conduit routing, equipment placement, instrumentation, and cable pathways.
- Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) & Flow Charts: Develop operational flow diagrams and process documentation.
- Control Narratives & Interlocking: Design equipment sequencing, safety interlocks, permissives, alarm logic, and shutdown routines.
- PLC Programming: Develop, modify, troubleshoot, and commission PLC programs utilizing Allen-Bradley, Schneider Electric, Siemens, AutomationDirect, or equivalent platforms.
- HMI & SCADA Development: Design operator interfaces, alarm management, historical trending, reporting, and supervisory control systems.
- Industrial Networking: Working knowledge of Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP, Modbus RTU, Profibus, Profinet, DeviceNet, and industrial communication protocols.
- Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs): Configure, commission, and troubleshoot VFDs and motor control systems.
- Instrumentation: Design and integrate pressure, level, flow, temperature, and analytical instrumentation into automated processes.
- Documentation: Maintain revision-controlled drawing packages, programming backups, project documentation, and as-built drawings.
Certifications:
- Preferred: AutoCAD Electrical Certification.
- Preferred: Rockwell Automation, Siemens, Schneider Electric, Ignition, VTScada, FactoryTalk, or similar PLC/HMI certifications.
- Preferred: Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST) or equivalent.
- Preferred: OSHA 10/30 or MSHA experience.

- Attention to Detail: Produce accurate, organized, and professional drawing packages with minimal supervision.
- Analytical Thinking: Evaluate control strategies and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reliability, and safety.
- Communication Skills: Effectively communicate technical concepts with customers, electricians, engineers, programmers, and project managers.
- Problem Solving: Diagnose control system issues both remotely and in the field.
- Organization: Manage multiple projects while maintaining schedules and documentation.
- Maintain Workspace: Keep workspaces organized, document project progress with notes and photographs, and communicate incomplete tasks for smooth project handoffs.
Compliance and Safety:
- Regulatory Knowledge: Understanding of NEC, NFPA 70E, UL508A, ISA standards, and industrial electrical design practices.
- Safety Practices: Commitment to maintaining a safe working environment during design, startup, commissioning, and field support.
- MSHA: CESI will provide MSHA certification.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to travel periodically to customer job sites.
- Ability to walk industrial facilities, climb stairs and ladders, and work around operating equipment.
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to perform field commissioning and troubleshooting in varying environmental conditions.
Additional Requirements:
- Travel: Occasional travel for customer meetings, field verification, commissioning, and startup assistance.
- Flexibility: Willingness to work occasional evenings or weekends during equipment startups or customer emergencies.
- Continuous Learning: Stay current with evolving automation technologies, industrial networking, PLC platforms, and SCADA software.
Preferred Attributes:
- Experience designing complete industrial automation systems from concept through commissioning.
- Understanding of aggregate plants, crushing operations, concrete batching, asphalt production, water handling systems, or heavy industrial facilities.
- Familiarity with UL508A industrial control panel construction.
- Experience estimating projects, selecting components, preparing bills of material, and supporting procurement.
- Project management experience coordinating electrical design, programming, fabrication, installation, and startup.
- Ability to assist with customer training and development of operation manuals.
- Safety-minded individual who contributes to safety meetings, tailgate training, and continuous improvement initiatives.
