This role is ideal for a mechanic who thrives in fastpaced field conditions, understands preventative maintenance and diagnostics for dieselpowered equipment, and takes pride in keeping missioncritical assets running during complex overnight operations. You will be responsible for inspecting, servicing, troubleshooting, and repairing a wide range of construction and support equipment, ensuring compliance with manufacturer specifications, Caltrans requirements, and sitespecific safety standards. Your work will be essential to maintaining uninterrupted progress on industrial coating and equipmentintensive activities occurring within live traffic corridors.
This position is primarily night shift, with staggered start times designed to align with Bay Area traffic patterns, lane closure windows, and major regional events. Work is performed during lowimpact overnight hours to support safe maintenance and repair activities while minimizing disruption to the traveling public. The typical workweek ranges from 50 to 60 hours, reflecting the critical, aroundtheclock nature of this longterm, 5year bridge infrastructure project.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:
In this Diesel Equipment Mechanic role, you will support nightly bridge operations by performing onsite inspection, maintenance, and repair of dieselpowered construction equipment and support vehicles critical to ongoing work activities.
You will monitor equipment condition throughout the shift, conduct routine and preventative maintenance, diagnose mechanical and electrical issues, and identify potential failures that could impact operations, worker safety, or project timelines. This role includes servicing engines, hydraulic systems, fuel systems, braking components, and auxiliary equipment, as well as verifying that machinery, tools, generators, and mobile equipment are operating safely and efficiently. You will ensure all maintenance and repair work complies with manufacturer specifications, Caltrans requirements, project standards, and sitespecific safety procedures while supporting industrial coating, heavy equipment, and roadway operations within active traffic corridors.
Key Responsibilities include:
Overnight Equipment Support

Perform onsite inspections, preventative maintenance (PM), and repairs on dieselpowered construction equipment and support vehicles during nightly bridge operations.

Prioritize and execute repairs within laneclosure windows to keep work fronts moving and minimize downtime.
DiagnosticsRepairs

Troubleshoot and repair engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, brake systems, fuel/DEF systems, cooling systems, and powertrains.

Diagnose fault codes with OEM software/scanners, document findings and corrective actions.
Asset ReadinessCompliance
-
Verify safe operation of generators, compressors, light plants, pumps, welders, lifts (scissor/boom), forklifts, small tools, and service trucks before deployment.

Ensure all work complies with manufacturer specs, sitespecific safety plans, and Caltrans/contract requirements.
Preventative Maintenance Program

Complete PM services (fluids, filters, torque checks, belts/hoses) at prescribed intervals; maintain accurate PM logs.

Track parts usage and recommend reorder levels, flag recurring failures for reliability improvements.
SafetyWork Controls

Apply LOTO, hotwork, confined space, and elevated work procedures as required by the task and location.

Maintain clean, organized, and spillcontrolled work areas; properly handle and dispose of fluids and waste.
Field ReadinessMobility
-
Operate a fully outfitted service truck; respond to breakdowns across multiple work zones within the bridge corridor.

Support equipment moves, refueling, battery service, tire service, and endofshift readiness.
DocumentationCommunication

Complete digital work orders with cause/correction details, parts, labor, and time stamps.

Communicate equipment status and risk to supervisors, superintendents, and traffic/safety teams.

Experience

3–5+ years handson experience as a Diesel Mechanic/Field Service Tech with heavy construction equipment or mixed fleets.

Demonstrated ability to diagnose and repair engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems on equipment operating in heavyduty environments.

Technical Skills

Proficient with diagnostic tools (multimeter, hydraulic pressure gauges), OEM/aftermarket scan tools, and service literature.

Able to read schematics (electrical/hydraulic) and follow preventive maintenance schedules.

Competent with welding/cutting for basic fabrication and field repairs (preferred).

Safety

Working knowledge of LOTO, machine guarding, hot work, and hazard communication.

Ability to apply sitespecific safety protocols in active traffic corridors and industrial work zones.

Work Conditions

Willing and able to work primarily night shift with staggered start times; typical 50–60 hours/week.

Comfortable working outdoors around live traffic, at heights, and in elevated/noisy/lowlight environments with appropriate PPE.

Licenses

Valid driver's license and clean driving record (CDL helpful but not required unless you want it).

Ability to obtain site access credentials and employerprovided trainings (e.g., OSHA10/30 if required by contract).

Lift/pull/push up to ~50–75 lbs., frequent standing/kneeling/climbing, safe use of hand/power tools, and ability to work in awkward positions as needed.
