Job Description and Duties
The Seasonal Clerk (SC) will enter, modify, update, and verify data on various applications/reports, as well as identify errors, inconsistencies, and omissions on those applications/reports. Additionally, with supervision, the SC will take action to resolve less complex problems, scan report forms for completeness, assist with clearing dispositions (phone calls, faxing, letters, etc.), create files and labels, file completed documents/applications, complete draft form letters, open and distribute mail, assist with mail outs, and answer phones.
Candidates may work in any of the following Bureau of Firearms (BOF) areas:
Firearms Investigations and Dangerous Weapons Enforcement (FIDWE):
The FIDWE team is responsible for obtaining firearms and ammunition from persons who have acquired firearms and/or ammunition and have become prohibited from owning/possessing a firearm and/or ammunition since their initial acquisition.
Agency Notification Unit (ANU):
The ANU conducts firearms eligibility checks of individuals applying to become peace officers, public officers, armed security guards, or students in Peace Officer Standards and Training certification training courses.
Eligibility Clearance Unit (ECU):
The ECU is responsible for analyzing criminal history information and other records to determine the eligibility of a person to own or possess firearms and/or ammunition for individuals attempting to purchase or transfer firearms in the State of California.
Regulatory Compliance Unit (RCU):
The RCU provides information, guidance, and comprehensive firearm education to licensed California Firearm Dealers, Ammunition Vendors, Firearm Manufacturers, and BOF staff regarding firearm-related statutes and legislation through in-person and webinar training. In addition, RCU's Field Representatives conduct routine regulatory inspections of California Firearm Dealers, Ammunition Vendors, Firearms Manufacturers, and Gun Shows to ensure compliance with state and federal firearm laws and regulations.
Customer Support Center (CSC):
The CSC is responsible for responding to inquiries from the public regarding firearms laws, legislation, and ownership.
Firearm Applicant and Release Unit (FARU):
The FARU is responsible for analyzing criminal history information and other firearms eligibility records for individuals seeking to record firearms in their name and for persons seeking to retrieve firearms and/or ammunition in the possession of law enforcement agencies.
