Position Summary
The CNC Setup Technician is responsible for setting up, adjusting, and optimizing CNC
machines for production runs in a fast-paced machine shop environment. This role
ensures machines are properly tooled, calibrated, and ready to produce high-quality
parts to print. The ideal candidate has strong mechanical aptitude, blueprint reading
skills, and experience with precision measurement tools.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up CNC mills, lathes, and palletizers
- Install and align tooling, fixtures, and workpieces
- Load and verify CNC programs; make offsets and minor program edits as needed
- Perform first-piece inspections to ensure compliance with blueprints and quality standards
- Monitor machine performance and make necessary adjustments to maintain part quality
- Troubleshoot setup issues and work with programmers and supervisors to resolve problems
- Maintain accurate documentation. Use and create setup instructions
- Assist with machine maintenance and cleanliness (5S) in accordance with shop standards
- Assist with tooling inventory and monitor tooling levels.
- Follow all company safety policies and OSHA guidelines
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED (technical certification preferred)
- 3+ years of CNC setup experience in a machine shop environment
- Proficient in reading blueprints, GD&T, and technical drawings
- Strong knowledge of cutting tools, feeds and speeds, and workholding methods
- Experience with precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, indicators, height gauges)
- Ability to interpret G and M-code and make basic program adjustments for both mills and lathes.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with multi-axis CNC machines
- Experience with high volume production
- Familiarity with Haas and Brother machinery
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles
- Forklift certification
